Have a Mary Christmas! Row erupts over calls for a female volunteer to be allowed to play Santa Claus in town's annual festive tour

A row has broken out over calls for a female volunteer to be allowed to dress up as Santa Claus for a town's annual Christmas parade.
Father Christmas has toured the streets of Newton Aycliffe every Christmas Eve since the 1960s.
Excited children and their parents crowd the County Durham town centre to see Santa go by on a float as he hands out sweets to the youngsters. But when two women volunteered to play Santa this year, one member of the local council said 'political correctness' was taking priority over residents' wishes and tried to stop them. At a recent council meeting Great Aycliffe Town Council agreed that one of the women who put their names forward should be granted the role.
But Labour Cllr Arun Chandran objected, saying: 'There is no shortage of male volunteers to act as Santa Claus, so we should not permit a female volunteer to perform the role.
'This has nothing to do with equality. There is no legality issue on this.
'My understanding is that Santa Claus otherwise called Father Christmas is a male role.
'I have no issue with a Mrs Claus. But Santa Claus being a man is a long-held tradition accepted by the cast majority of society without question and change just for the sake of that will only serve to attract negative publicity.'
He continued: 'I believe that children in particular will be expecting a male Santa, and that it may well reflect badly on the council if we were to deliberately introduce a form of political correctness just because a Labour Party member turns up at a Events Sub Committee meeting to demand women's rights to be Santa Claus.'

Jesus Christ but people worry about silly things.
This is why global warming is going to wipe out our race, because we get all up in arms over things like the gender (and race) of fictional characters. Santa, James Bond, the Doctor, and Spider-Man to name just a few.

Here’s how I see it.
A woman can play Father Christmas if she wishes, but she’d better look and sound like a man because children think Santa is a man. So, if she dresses and acts and sounds like a man convincingly, that’s fine, but....
She’s still ACTING LIKE A MAN.
So. That kinda negates the point of having a woman Santa in my opinion.
Look. Some roles are best for men and some for women. If I had a choice I’d choose taking my daughter to see a male Santa over a female one any day.

There's no secret agenda to destroy your weird little world, Vic, I just don't have a problem with a woman playing Santa Claus.

He is based on an actual historical character, by the way
Plus there is already a Mrs Claus in tradition
So this is being done to neutralise the sex of the character based on PC

This is just another silly political statement by a minority leading to yet another example of commercial cowardice.
Though come to think of it, in the sick world in which we now live Santa himself - or even, ridiculously, herself - will probably disappear from the December calendar because of the presumed risk to a child sitting on the bearded one's knee and asking for a gender-fluid doll or an environmentally-friendly train set.
This is just another silly political statement by a minority leading to yet another example of commercial cowardice.
