New battery could dump enough energy to successfully lift-off a plane
By applying magnetic forces to straighten the tortuous path that lithium ions navigate through the electrodes, the scientists believe, they could significantly boost the rate at which the device discharges electricity.
That shot of power could open up a use that has long eluded batteries: meeting the huge demands of a passenger aircraft at liftoff. If it works as hoped, it would enable regional commuter flights that don’t burn fuel or produce direct climate emissions.
Viswanathan, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Carnegie Mellon, initiated and is leading the research project. He and Chiang are now collaborating with 24M, the lithium-ion battery manufacturer Chiang cofounded in 2010, and Zunum Aero, an aircraft startup based in Bothell, Washington, to develop and test prototype batteries specifically designed for the needs of an advanced hybrid plane.

With the advances going on, it shouldn't be long before practically everything can run on powerful and long-lasting batteries.

Interesting. Hope this pans out.

Rape the Earth for Lithium, ? Tons and tons of CO2 into the Atmosphere to make these Batteries ?

it's true there are 2 sides of every coin
Lithium is a rare element and there is unlikely enough to meet all our energy needs, although as a proof of concept this does show we are capable of moving away from fossil fuels for pretty much all our power requirements per 'device'... even if there isn't enough for all our devices. (sadly resource wars seem inevitable, we will get rid our reliance on oil, only to create a reliance on Lithium and other rare minerals for batteries )
the amount of CO2 to make the batteries is normally overstated. It depends on the power source of the factory, if it's renewable the CO2 is a lot less than if it's fossil fuels. although there is always going to be some caused extracting the lithium.

Check the cost of making these Batteries, find out how long they last, and last of all the cost of replacing them !
