1 in 4 Americans unaware Earth circles Sun...
Americans are enthusiastic about the promise of science but lack basic knowledge of it, with one in four unaware that the Earth revolves around the Sun, said a poll out Friday.
The survey included more than 2,200 people in the United States and was conducted by the National Science Foundation.
Ten questions about physical and biological science were on the quiz, and the average score -- 6.5 correct -- was barely a passing grade.

Sadly every country has a frightening large number of idiots... fortunately there are enough intelligent people for it not to be too damaging
What's the betting the 1 in 4 are most likely to be the more religious of those polled?
Do we have a figure for Britain- I tend to think were are proportionally more likely to avoid religious ignorance ( certainly the case on those accepting the fact of evolution).

I have seen that something around 22 percent of Britons could be described as creationists.

It's 19% in the UK Tess.
Probing a more universal measure of knowledge, Gallup also asked the following basic science question, which has been used to indicate the level of public knowledge in two European countries in recent years: "As far as you know, does the earth revolve around the sun or does the sun revolve around the earth?" In the new poll, about four out of five Americans (79%) correctly respond that the earth revolves around the sun, while 18% say it is the other way around. These results are comparable to those found in Germany when a similar question was asked there in 1996; in response to that poll, 74% of Germans gave the correct answer, while 16% thought the sun revolved around the earth, and 10% said they didn't know. When the question was asked in Great Britain that same year, 67% answered correctly, 19% answered incorrectly, and 14% didn't know.

Isn't that what the Bible does in Genesis - it describes in story form that people just on the brink of early civilisation could understand about evolution.
It would be no good telling people in great scientific detail how it all happened or about the time it took between each stage, so instead its like the condensed and simplified version for infant civilisation.

Do you believe its all literal then?
Because it tends to throw up all sorts of problems, considering most holy books say one thing in one verse or chapter and a couple of verses or chapters later the exact opposite, they are also vague on some points which can be very important and don't cover some instances, people understand a section one way others in different ways which tends to cause endless problems on how people, in their huge variations should act and for some it beomes a barrier to society developing and moving forward, even in medical terms. If it is literal we should obey every word and suggestion - imossible without making life for many people intolerable.

Re: 1 in 4 Americans unaware Earth circles Sun...
So like most people you pick and choose which bits you believe and take seriously and avoid stuff which is either a truth lost in translation due to the time and customs of when written or translated, or in some cases a sort of chinese whispers, at least I hope some of it is because of that, as some punishments for minor transgressions and even major ones, are frankly horrendous and breathtakingly not the ideas of a loving father by any stretch of the imagination.. As the god who gave the Bible, Quoran and other books is supposed to be all powerful you'd think it would have made a better, clearer job of telling us what it requires of us or maybe chosen the messengers a bit more carefully, why are all these books contradicary and so convulated.

No They Have FAITH in the BIBLE.
http://guardianlv.com/2014/02/earth-revolves-around-sun-unknown-to-one-in-four-americans/
The fact that the Earth revolves around the Sun is unknown to one in four Americans is apparent; however, the survey did not release data about the religious beliefs of the participants they surveyed. Because of this, it is not known if, perhaps because of a belief in creationism, that less than half (48 percent) of Americans, answered that they did not think humans evolved from an earlier species, as 73-80 percent of Americans identify as Christians.

Please produce a source.
There was a debate (about 150 years ago) but it was relative to the Speed of light (299 792 km/sec) and yes we probably would die if we went that fast.

There was much concern when the first steam engines came out that if people travelled on them they would be unable to breath and all sorts would happen to them. Although when you think about it when you are travelling at speed without protection it can be uncomfortable so they may have almost had a point if people had been flying along in open top carriages at the alarming speed of 12miles an hour I think it was compared to a briskly walking horse does about 4miles an hour, normal speed about 2 - 3 miles an hour or at the gallop about 25 - 30 miles an hour.

There was one scientist who made that claim, which was refuted immediately after by a scientist who wasn't a hack:

Morning all. Sadly for Americans, over 40% of educational institutions, (schools, colleges etc) refuse to teach evolution. Surely this holds people back from advancement and taking control of their own lives, instead of leaving everything to a mythical being who has no basis, no foundation in reasoning, logic, and truth. I suspect the majority of those schools are in what is called the Bible Belt. And Americans seem to think they are advanced? Yeh, right.

the bit in Italics, what they may as well be doing by not teaching evolution and relying on dark age fairytales. they want to increase the infant mortality rate by over 3000% to bring it back in line to the time that we relied on the Bible instead os Science.

If someone were to ask me if the earth circled around the sun or the sun around the earth, I would reply:
"Neither, because If I remove the thinking subject, the whole material world must at once vanish because it is nothing but a phenomenal appearance in the sensibility of ourselves as a subject, and a manner or species of representation."
(from Kant's Critique of Pure Reason)

Nice reply Doc. I've often said that if we took Mankind out of the equation, non-existant, where the God? Looking at it from that point of view and assuming God exists, then I see Mankind as just playthings for Him, and no more than a game for Him to play.
