Have you ever....
..done your back in?
I bent forwards a couple of days ago, hot pain stabbed my lower back, and its been agony ever since.
I know from past experience it will take many pain killers, strong anti inflammatory gel, and time (usually a couple of weeks) before it will stop hurting.

Yup. Slipped a disc 30 years ago. Spent a week in traction then wearing a back brace for 4 months..

Re: Have you ever....
Ouch...painful.
I have known a couple of people who slipped discs and I know its agony, for a long time.
Mine isn't a slipped disc, but its painful none the less.
I first hurt my back when I was young, doing the Fosbury flop at school didn't help either.
I think once you weaken something it has a tendency to cause trouble for life.

Re: Have you ever....
Learn to control it mentally. A slipped disc or pinched nerve sets up a somatic pain cycle...
Certain places the body react automatically. With the spine (which the body is keyed to protect), the autonomic nervous system, upon some stimulus (pinched nerve or slipped disc), sets up a process that compresses the lateral (back) muscles to lend support. But this squeezes the spine and reciprocally has the effect of again compressing the nerve. It's circular: the nerve shouts pain, causing the autonomic nervous system to freeze, causing the spine to compress and restimulate (cause) the pain...it can go on for weeks.
It's called a somatic pain cycle because the body, itself, indirectly causes the pain. You interrupt the body, or autonomic system, by literally telling it to stop.
Try it...as soon as you do, the body will respond. Works for me every time. You can do a lot by just telling your body to do something...a kind of mind over matter. With practice, you can take what would be weeks of pain, and make it go away in 20-minutes.

Perhaps if we as humans can do that with pain, using our minds so that way, then we can also do that to diseases.

A lot can be done that way. Works in reverse, too. They say that Elvis was obsessed with the fact that his mother's death was at age 42.
When did he die? Age 42.

But the pain cycle is well-studied"

A self-perpetuating cycle in which skeletal muscle spasm causes local ischemia and pain, which exacerbates the spasm, which in turn exacerbates the pain.

Interesting Quill....mind over matter can often work with pain.
It would have saved me quite a bit over the years instead of paying for treatment.

Did mine playing cricket. Bent over to pick the ball up and my back exploded in the worst agony ever. Taken straight to hospital as I lost all sensation in one leg.
Wow, it stung.

Re: Have you ever....
The bending forwards and twisting movement at the same time is the most common cause of causing the back to suddenly explode with pain....that's what my physio told me anyway.

You know, if I’d have said any of these things, I’d have been called a whackdoodle and Wolf and/or didge would’ve had one of those screaming fits at me.

Well mainly as that is bullshit and that she died at 46
Elvis certainly suffered anxiety and depression, which there certainly is a connection to his mother, how he was raised. She certainly smothered him, but I think he just could not handle stardom and lead a normal life.
Another factor to this was his twin, who died still born.
The problem with Elvis, is he did not recognise his mental health issues. Even more with the way he was hooked on prescription drugs

Sorry to hear you hurt your back, but to me, its going to be difficult, but should be a cue to rise up to overcoming this injury. Which is going to cause sadly more pain in the process, but plenty of physio. With more importantly a will to overcome this.
It means taking a step back and allowing others to do things for you, for a while and taking it one step at a time.
Dont try to rush the healing process, or after any surgery that maybe needed. As time is a great healer. What is important. Is you take your time with recovery.
So allow yourself to be pampered, until you feel ready and strong enough.

Thanks Didge......mine is obviously not so serious this time because today I feel lots better.
In the past I have had it so bad I have to sort of roll out of bed, unable to stand properly its so painful.
I agree with you that time is the best healer when something goes wrong like this, in the past I have had physio and regularly went to an osteopath at one time with back and neck problems....and that was when I was in my 30's, thankfully 30 years on its not so bad....just a minor hiccup when I twist suddenly.

Re: Have you ever....
Years ago I spent many nights lying on floor by the side of the settee, a sneeze was enough to cripple me with intense pain.I had to roll off the settee on to the floor where my Wife would bring Blankets to keep me warm over night. Had an OP eventually to remove spurs of bone from my spine that were pressing on nerves.Still have a prolapsed disc that gives me pain. My sympathy to anyone who has back problems !

Actually, you're quite keen on these types of things, and we're always glad to hear your view. Because you read a lot, you're a wealth of information on such subjects.
There's a fine line on just "whackdoodle", and things that are strange, but delve into matters that we just don't understand. This is one of them. Since the rise of the empirical sciences there has been a bias toward physical aspects of our bodies. But, the mental is physical as well...maternal instinct is as real as the breast. Nature didn't adhere to philosophical categories, so she just keeps on a-tootin', leaving us to construct the gestalt of it all.
It's another example of how we 'frame' our own biases into understanding.

There is no bias here.
You were simple wrong here and proves my point
You could not admit to your error
Your whole hypothesis was based on a error
Hence you did frame a bias on something you were completely wrong over
The reality is, many people who become famous, simple cannot handle this. In this case Elvis, came from a mother that mollycoddled him. He was unable to deal with anxiety and depression. Thus parenting is the key here as to why things can and do end up going wrong with people.

You must have been in agony Nicko, recurring back pain can rule if not ruin your life.
Years ago I had a bad bout of it, I couldn't get up off the floor, my son said smoking dope would help, next time he came he brought me a spliff, but I was feeling better so I put it away in a drawer for when the pain came back.
OH said I was having our son as a drug dealer.....and next time I went to find it it had disappeared.
He probably smoked it himself.
