•Obama and Hollande took turns saying they couldn't declare a 'varotie' ally
•US President refuses to say Britain was his favourite ally
•Claimed all European countries were both 'wonderful in their own ways'
•Comes after Jon Kerry refused to mention the UK during speech on Syria
•Secretary of State claimed France were the 'oldest ally' and did not mention the UK

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2557189/Obama-snubs-Britain-cozies-French-saying-picking-best-ally-like-picking-favorite-daughter.html

Britain's economy is doing well and probably the most successful in Europe at the moment. Hollande's Socialist government is in deep shit and going down fast. Proof that Obama cares about Socialism more than he does about the US economy!

On a visit by the French President it would be a pretty massive 'faux pas' to starting talking about the 'special relationship ' wouldn't it? And of course they aren't going to declare favourites; they're world leaders not kids in a playground fgs!

And of course we wont be mentioned regarding Syria- we ducked out remember? As to the pictures of Blair and Bush, as though that was some golden age- as I recall most did and still DO massively oppose what those two did- what exactly does the Daily Mail want? Unquestionable kow towing to Washington?

And saying France is the USA's oldest ally is simply a statement of fact.

Bitchy article tbh...

And it is proof of nothing the like of you said; world leaders visit each other- how ridiculous to assume we must be mentioned in a meeting between two leaders of two others nations...

No we don't, I for one would say that there is far more France-bashing in the regular U.S. than any bashing of the British. No doubt that we have our "'Murica!" rednecks who hate everybody who's not from a red state, but the majority of Americans aren't like them.

I agree that it would be weird for Hollande to visit and Obama to make a point of calling Britain our favorite ally -- that would be a slap to the French. I don't know why we should be naming a "favorite" ally in any situation, that'd be like taking to your Facebook account and numbering your friends from favorite to least favorite.

France is also Scotland's oldest ally as well.

Scot's still served in the Royal Navy at Trafalgar and the British Army at Waterloo.

Mary Queen of Scots was half-French. Her father's first wife was from France too. Lots of her nobles in Scotland, during her minority when she was being brought up at the French court of Henri II, were granted nobility and lands in France.

Obama made it clear ha disliked Britain from the outset. No surprise he is cosying up with Hollande then. I doubt it will add to Obamas reputation. In the end the French will do as they have always done and was best summed up succinctly by De Gaulle.

At the end of the second world war De Gaulle had been given given a base throughout in jolly old England. He stated those famous words "We shall astound you with our ingratitude" and by God was he right. Despite all we had done he continued to knife the Brits in the back for the rest of his life.

What a good judge of character Obama isn't!

What a wonderfully erudite response. What a treasure to the Australian nation you must be. Obama was very luke warm indeed to the "Special relationship" from the outset that was well reported at the time. As for my second sentence about De Gaulle and France have you anything as scintillating to say about that. I hang on your every utterance.

America snubs Britain and cosies up to France Empty Re: America snubs Britain and cosies up to France

Obama's occasional photo ops with Cameron mask a horrifying truth underneath, that President Obama has obliterated the Anglo-American alliance since he took office, and is arguably one of the most anti-British Presidents of all time.

When President Obama took office, one of his first moves was to remove a bust of Churchill that Bush had been given by Tony Blair in the wake of 9/11. It was a symbol that Britain stood by America, and Obama’s disposal of it spoke volumes. The Anglo-American alliance was a relic of the Bush era, and would be swept away.

Other swipes, such as Obama’s false reference to BP as “British Petroleum,” his declaration that America had “no stronger ally” than France, the senior State Dept. official who said about Britain, “You’re just the same as the other 190 countries in the world. You shouldn’t expect special treatment” and the fact that not a single senior member of the Obama administration attended the funeral of Margaret Thatcher, all give indications about how Britain is seen in Obama’s America.

Yet the most galling snub to Britain comes in the form of the Falkland Islands dispute. Although British territory for centuries, and in the face of a population that consistently votes over 98% in favor of remaining British, Argentina have attempted to claim the Islands as their own.

After losing a war against Britain in the 1980’s, Argentina adopted a new tactic, calling for ‘negotiations’ to the sovereignty of the Islands, hoping to at least get a chunk of the land. The Obama administration, speaking through then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, sided against their best ally, and with Kirchner’s Argentina, demanding Britain sit down with Argentina and negotiate sovereignty of the British territory under the pretense of neutrality.

All this contributes to a strong signal from the Obama administration that Britain is really not that important to America anymore.

If that is the case, then why should Britain stick its neck out, and put British lives on the line in a conflict that does not directly serve British interests? The argument that Britain has a duty to support its ally is simply not compelling enough in the Obama era.

Long ago President Obama decided that America didn’t need Britain anymore. As a consequence, Britain has now discovered that it doesn’t need America either. Mr. Obama is now paying for his poor judgment, and America is significantly weakened as a consequence.

Scot's still served in the Royal Navy at Trafalgar and the British Army at Waterloo.

Funny old world isn't it.

Mary Queen of Scots was half-French. Her father's first wife was from France too. Lots of her nobles in Scotland, during her minority when she was being brought up at the French court of Henri II, were granted nobility and lands in France.

C'est la vie.

For years, pre-Union, France was protector of Scotland against the English, in very much the same way as England was the protector of Portugal against Spain. It was called the Auld Alliance:

electricscotland wrote:The special relationship between Scotland and France, acknowledged in the phrase 'The Auld Alliance', has formed a bond between the two peoples that survives irritations and misunderstandings.

It was first and always a military alliance against the common enemy, England. Joan of Arc's personal standard was painted by a Scotsman, probably called James Polwarth, and Scots fought under her command when she relieved the siege of Orleans and at the battles of Jargeau and Patay in 1429.

According to the most complete account of The Auld Alliance, Stephen Wood's book with that title, an un-named Scotsman, after returning to Scotland after Joan's execution, continued the chronicler Fordun's manuscript Scotichronicon when a monk in Dunfermline Abbey, and recorded how he had seen and accompanied 'the marvellous Maid' in her attempt to bring about the recovery of France'. By then the Alliance itself was almost a century and a half old.

It may be credited to one of the least distinguished of our Kings, John Balliol, known as Toom Tabard, who had become King of Scots in 1292, when Edward I of England was invited to determine who had the best claim to the vacant Scottish throne. Edward compelled Balliol to accept him as his overlord. In fact Balliol, as a great landowner in England and France as well as Scotland, was already a vassal of both Edward and of Philip IV of France, though not, of course, in his new capacity as King of Scots.

These things were confused in the Middle Ages, for Edward of England himself held lands in France and so was a vassal of the French King, too. But in 1294 he was, as King of England, at war with France and so the French King saw the advantages of a Scottish ally.

That was to be the pattern of the alliance. The Scots helped France and the French helped the Scots. The French always had more benefit from the Alliance. This was partly because mediaeval wars between France and England always took the form of an English invasion of France and partly because it was easier for the Scots to invade England than for the French.
