THREE students injured, teacher accidentally fired his gun during a safety demonstration in a US classroom.
A CALIFORNIA teacher who also serves as a reserve police officer accidentally fired a pistol inside his classroom while teaching about gun safety and injured three students, according to reports.
Dennis Alexander was teaching public safety awareness in his administration of justice class at Seaside High School when he fired a semiautomatic handgun and hit the ceiling, KSBW reported.
The New York Post reports teachers are not permitted to possess firearms in California schools.
The errant bullet ricocheted off the ceiling, sending out fragments that injured three students, including a 17-year-old who was struck in the neck, the boy’s dad, Fermin Gonzalez, told the station.
Seaside police said in a statement that no one suffered serious injuries.
Mr Alexander had just told the class that he wanted to make sure his gun wasn’t loaded when it went off, leaving the children stunned, Mr Gonzales said.
“It’s the craziest thing. It could have been very bad,” Mr Gonzales said, adding that the teacher was about to demonstrate how to disarm a person.
Mr Alexander, a reserve cop in the Sand City Police Department, has apologised for his ballistic blunder.
He was placed on administrative leave at Seaside High School and the police force as the investigation is conducted.
“I have concerns about why he was displaying a loaded firearm in a classroom. We will be looking into that,” Sand City Police Chief Brian Ferrante told KSBW.
Mr Gonzales complained that no one at the school checked to make sure the children were unhurt before the school day resumed.
The 17-year-old’s parents were shocked when he came home with a blood-soaked shirt and a neck wound.
“He’s shaken up, but he’s going to be OK,” Mr Gonzales told KSBW. “I’m just pretty upset that no one told us anything and we had to call the police ourselves to report it.”
Mr Ferrante said Mr Alexander — who also is a Seaside City Council member — has been a reserve officer for the past 11 years, and described his track record as “positive and professional.”
Seaside Police Chief Abdul Pridgen said he doesn’t know if Mr Alexander had ever brought a firearm to the school before.
“We’re looking into any violation of city ordinance or the penal code and we’ll determine whether or not there are any applicable charges,” Mr Pridgen told the Mercury News.
Monterey Peninsula schools chief PK Diffenbaugh said: “I think a lot of questions on parents’ minds are, why a teacher would be pointing a loaded firearm at the ceiling in front of students.”
The frightening incident occurred amid a national debate over whether to arm teachers in the wake of the school shooting that left 17 dead in Parkland, Florida.
On Wednesday, students across the nation planned to walk out of their classrooms to raise awareness about gun violence and safety.
One KSBW Facebook fan wrote: “This is clear example why teachers shouldn’t have a gun. Accidents happen, even to people with experience.”
Another person added: “Oh great ... Ya let’s give ALL the teachers guns. What could possibly go wrong?”

This was not an "accident" -- it should have been reported as an incompetent, careless and totally criminal discharge of a loaded firearm...
The wrongful reporting of this incident as an "accident" just shows how totally corrupt the particular news service involved is, in regard to these matters..

That teacher should be sitting in a jail cell somewhere..
If not, why not ?

Just to be certain, this was not a teacher who carries a gun as a measure against any school shooters. This was a teacher in a criminal justice class, teaching **ahem** safety in handling guns. He was checking to see the gun was unloaded the sloppy way: pulling the trigger. Most people who do this are already convinced the gun is unloaded...so, see how easily it happens?
There's a right way and a wrong way. Sure a dry-fire is an easy way to assure a gun is unloaded...until it's not. I have defended a few murder cases where this is precisely what happened. When a dry-fire or a drop-fire kills someone, the police check into the shooter's relationships with the victim, and any sign of animosity whatsoever (even a bad grade) will result in murder charges, I promise. What else can they do? So follow the rules, rigorously.
This is another example of what can happen around guns. Human errors are a given. The gun is designed to kill, so no one is surprised when it happens. Fook...it's what is expected, dummy!
So--simple fact--the more guns you bring into a setting like a school, the more this is going to happen. Anyone who argues that teachers should be armed, take a look.
* * * *
BTW, I've been meaning to bring this up: the logic of arming teachers should extend to the students themselves. After all, as far as protection goes, they are the real potential victims, and the ones who need direct protection. People would think twice about bringing an AR-15 to school if they knew every other kid was armed.
If you're in favor of arming teachers, you should have no qualms about arming the students themselves. Right? Or wrong? Discuss.

The ceiling was shot. It will survive.
It was an accidental discharge, but the gun was pointed up, down or away from people, as per safety guidelines. It's why guns are always pointed away. In a moment of carelessness they can go off, if you're messing with them.

Total bullshit...
The gun should not have been loaded in the first place -- obviously you don't need to have the proper training or experience to demonstrate "gun safety" and proper handling, over there in Texas either, going by your comments, DopeyDawg..
One of the first things I learnt in the Army Reserve, way back when, was that there is no such thing as an "accidental" discharge with an empty firearm -- and if that fuckwitted teacher had made sure the weapons were safe beforehand, then they would, by definition, have been empty.
Yet another good reason to require shooters to be trained and licensed, rather than have braindead morons able to buy handguns, teach classes, and even join the police force as a "reservist"..

In the British Army it's known as a "negligent discharge" and is a serious offence.

How is pulling the trigger to check for live rounds accidental? Sounds pretty intentional to me.
