I know. It's unbelievable. Can't imagine what they're going through. Even in Surrey which never had any weather problems. It's time for a major rethink on policy because I don't think this sort of thing's going to go away in the future.

Re: It's raining again!
Hardly. Those people in Salisbury have been living there for centuries without this problem. You can see most of the houses are old. It's the lack of upkeep of the pumping systems (which hasn't been modernised since 1941) and the Environment Agency's failure to keep the rivers dredged, a practise that's been ongoing for years in the past. They say 40% of the rivers are silt; this would have prevented the current situation happening.Beekeeper wrote:eddie wrote:

ALL of "those poor people..", mostly only have themselves to blame !!!
When will the English [and the Dutch..] learn that you DON'T build houses in waterways and floodplains if one doesn't want to be washed out whenever you get a heavier-than-normal shower of rain !
I agree in other places where they've built new houses on floodplains. Pretty stupid. Then again, if they'd built them on pillars of marine quality with the ground floor raised that would have been okay. Time to review the way we do things in the future.

I think you're right Tess, it's only going to get worse. The weather in my opinion is going to be one of our greatest challenges for the foreseeable future
Having said that it's a lovely sunny day here, the calm before the storm.

All this rain, its just normal for Liverpool!
Cameron needs to undo all the cuts made to flood defences and get some more resources in place quick.

WITH respect to those places like Surrey and Salisbury that either haven't seen flooding like this before, or would only experience it once or twice in a century ~ that kind of freakish weather is similar to what happened up in a rural valley inland from Brisbane a couple of years ago. Dozens of homes and small farms were hit one afternoon/evening by a one-off 'storm cell', and several people were killed..
Even though that valley had been settled over a century ago, it had never experienced that level of intense rainfall and 'flash floods' in their collective history..
AND climate change 'modelling' predicts an increased occurrence of such extreme events over the next few decades. Only time will tell..Tess. wrote:

WHEN it comes to bad developments in our 'First World' countries ~ where corrupt councils and guv'mnts are allowing crooked developers to develop flood-prone estates that they should never have been allowed to buy in the first place ~ I believe that the old commercial warning adage of "caveat emptor", let the buyer be aware, should apply alongside any statutory protections..
What sort of idiot buys a building block or a house that's built below flood levels ?
There are a lot of idiots out there! But, having done conveyancing for years, I have to wonder at what sort of idiot solicitor lets their client buy these houses. The UK's got some pretty stringent enquiries that have to be answered when buying property, so it's not as if they weren't told. And who'd give a mortgage on them? I suppose it's some shady developers with their own loans and own lawyers or something. Dolts.

Re: It's raining again!
Well, the river at the bottom of the road has never, ever flooded as far as the records can tell, because the water meadows are designed to take the flooding. Now they are sandbagged down there and the environment agency has been in contact with them. The pub that is threatened has just had a fortune spent on it and is very old. Climate change cannot be denied.

Re: It's raining again!
And yet this happened long before man had technology. We had mini ice ages in the 14th century. I am not a denier but neither am I convinced. For example a single major volcanic eruption could reduce global temperatures 2 degrees in a year.
Its bloody wet though and I'm off to rainy city this afternoon.

I don't think climate change can be denied, it's the cause of it that is a matter for debate :D

A good point ftl but as we have only been around a short time this may in fact be normal in a long cycle sort of way.

The Dorset Transport Twitter account added: “The last remaining rail route into Devon is now blocked by a landslip at Crewkerne. Devon and Cornwall now cut off from the rest of the UK by rail.

Yes, I agree we can't be sure can we. It's raining and we have major gusts here. I dread to think what it's like in the South West

Re: It's raining again!
Tributes have been paid to a seven-year-old boy who died after emergency services were called to a house in flood-hit Chertsey.
The boy, named locally as Zane Gbangbola, was declared dead at nearby St Peter's Hospital.
Police were called to the property at around 3.30am on Saturday following a request for assistance by the ambulance service.
His father, named locally as Kye Gbangbola and aged in his 40s, and his mother, in her 30s, remain in hospital in serious conditions. They are not thought to be life threatening.
Fifteen people, including two Surrey Police officers, were also taken to hospital as a precaution.
The boy's taekwondo instructor, Anoop Hothi, posted a message on Facebook: "My neighbours' little boy passed away ... He was such a lovely little boy, lovely parents. It was a joy to teach you martial arts little man."
Police refused to comment on speculation the death was related to carbon monoxide poisoning, but advised anyone in the Thameside area in Chertsey who showed signs of vomiting, diarrhoea and fever to seek medical assistance.
Access to the family's home was hindered by floodwaters covering nearby roads. Friends have described the seven-year-old as a "lovely little boy" who was looking forward to getting a new puppy.
