Why? I mean it’s like they want to perpetuate playground cliques. Pseudo-religious claptrap and quite frankly ridiculous IMO.

My mother belongs to a ladies philanthropic society here. My grandmother, cousins, great aunts and great-grandmother were/are members as well. She “can’t tell” me what they do. She wanted to know if I wanted to join and I was like ummmm no thanks.

I just don’t get it.

Many years ago, my Grandad, who was a builder, was given the opportunity to join the masons.   He asked them if they would hold the ceremony on Wandsworth Common.   The answer of course, was no.   He said that if they were ashamed of what they did, it wasn't for him thanks.

I watched that this morning and thought the same thing.   it's like they want to be part of something that makes them feel more important and mysterious than anyone else.   Pathetic really.

Exactly. And I feel the same about the male Freemasons, as well as the whole Greek system on college campuses here. It also perpetuates them Them vs. Us scenario.

It’s one thing being a member of a darts club or knitting circle but this secret handshake is laughable. It really makes me think how old are you?

But nothing will ever top the title of Grand Poobah of The Loyal Order of Buffalos Laughing

It was all about shit they had to say and learn and I'd been drinking and...I did learn how they are supposed to stand and their secret "salute".

He actually offered to take me to the women's Freemasons (which is why I clicked the thread) but I knew I'd end up telling Lisa and Ben and....oh you catch my drift. I'd be useless. Laughing

I've never been invited to be a Freemason, so I must assume that I'm just too much of a pleb to qualify. But equally I've never been able to understand all the negative publicity and even hatred that they attract.

So what if they do shuffle around in aprons, roll up their trouser legs, flop out a man boob while someone points a dagger at it and give each other funny handshakes?

Why shouldn't they help one of their fellow members to get a promotion or a business contract if they are not breaking any criminal or civil laws?

From my point of view, any organisation that raises and donates £30 million a year to charitable causes can also organise weekly beetle drives or even who-can-piss-highest-up-the-bog-wall contests if that's what floats their boat. They are not harming anyone else, but they are making the lot of the less fortunate a little better to bear.

How Savile got away with it, by using the money he raised for charity as a bargaining tool to stop what he was up to getting publicied.

Oh, and he was high up in the Freemasons which is believed to have given him extra protection.

Don't give a damn how much money they give to charity.

Many years ago I did a short temp job in Colchester while waiting to move.  The man I was working for was, to say the least, somewhat dense.   He had been invited to join the Masons, but had to learn everything he had to say ans do for his acceptance ceremony.  Suffice to say, he couldn't remember his lines.   So totally against their rules (which rather shows what an utter dipstick he was) he got me to test him!  To begin with I laughed about it, but when I actually thought about the words, the fact he was agreeing to die for them:

Before you can be permitted to advance any further in Masonry, it is my duty to inform you that you must take upon yourself a solemn oath or obligation, appertaining to this degreee that I, as the Master of this Lodge, assure you will not materially interfere with the duty to owe to our God, yourself, your family, your country or neighbour.

The candidate then takes off all his clothes and remove anything metal, watch, wedding ring, crucifix or medal.  He put back on his trousers, shirt haf of with left should exposed, a single sandal on his right foot.  He is hooded and blindfolded and a noose put round his neck.   He is then led into the room where there is an alter with candles and a bible with the Masonic symbol on it.   He then has to take an oath, which ends:

All this I solomnly sincerely promise and swear, with a firm and steadfast resolution to perform the same, without any mental reservations or secret evasion of mind whatever, binding myself under no less a penalty than having my throat cut across, my tongue torn out by its roots, and my body buried in the rough sands of the sea at low water mark, where the tide ebbs an flows twice in twenty four hours, should I ever knowingly violate this, my entered Apprentice obligation, so help me God ........

https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=pOjDCwAAQBAJ&pg=PT13&lpg=PT13&dq=do+Masons+promise+on+pain+of+death?&source=bl&ots=nJ5K5ZAW-A&sig=MF74XKz8RopfmIuqkxXLE0_5rZ0&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiU4-7G9rHXAhUqDMAKHRhIBhsQ6AEIKTAA#v=onepage&q=do%20Masons%20promise%20on%20pain%20of%20death%3F&f=false

If someone had told me the above, I would have said they were making it up, and nobody would be fool enough to make that promise.   However, that's exactly the promise my ex-boss was getting me to test him on, so I can confirm, thats completely true.

you have to remember that like many cults and other such groups...if you dont, entirely, fit within the narrow constraints of euro leftyism, to a lefty you are a non person or worse, and as we see repeated on here, they feel free to personally abuse you (rather than debate the issue) and then cry crocodile tears and have to find a "safe space" if a naughty word is used in retaliation....this habit it seems is gradually creeping into the habits of "some" american leftists too, not all, but there are definite signs
their policies are based not on concensu, but on the warblings of a few loud mothed activists, and propagated on a "he who shouts loudest" basis, with no room for anyone to have any personal freedom....
their way of defining policy is totally non understandable to anyone capable of thinking, (which is why leftist education policies and introductions invariably dumb down the system)
if its what they deem they want then its good (and only THEY know whats good) if its what their activists dont want then its bad and woe betide anyone who goes against it....being ignored is the LEAST of that unfortunate wights problems.
their policy making is almost invariably emotive, rather than evidence based, and partisan in the extreme.
their policies are demotivational, and almost entirely based on jealousy
vis
they would sooner restrict what a person can accumulate by his honest labours and give some away to someone who has NO claim on it bar some old historical wrongdoings of generations long gone to dust. so why would any sensible person bother to "strive" ?

nope....
but I "could" be a templar if i wished...by right of birth

but the above is true non the less....

example veggies

invariably lefty's
almost invariably(though not quite entirely) abusive to non veggies
hypocritical (since most were garmets that rquire "farming of some sort OR are the product of environmentally destructive industries
the (mostly) females use make up that has inevitably been tested on animals at some point...even if it was 50 years ago
almost (though not entirely) will use medicines and surgical procedures that have been animal tested

want more than anything to FORCE everyone else to become a veggie...

now rotate that into other issues and you have the left in its entirity

He doesn't know anything about it and can't find a thing out either .

Apparently they do a lot of charity work so they say .

If someone had told me the above, I would have said they were making it up, and nobody would be fool enough to make that promise.   However, that's exactly the promise my ex-boss was getting me to test him on, so I can confirm, thats completely true.

So, Savile was a Mason (I neither know nor care whether he was or he wasn't; it is a matter of supreme indifference to me) but I could equally point out that the vile Cyril Smith was a prominent member of the Labour Party (a former elected Labour Mayor, no less) before seeing greater opportunities in the Liberal Party. So should we judge the entire Labour Party by his standards.

And as for all the oath-taking  ritual and mumbo jumbo, just how many recalcitrant Freemasons have been found floating around on the ebbing tide, tongueless and with their throats cut?

The fact is that they perform ancient rites dating back through this mists of time that have neither real relevance nor consequence in this day and age, and if a bunch of blokes want to carry them out while dressed in funny robes (or without their keks) then  so be it.

It is all about as barmy as that wonderful scenario in the TV comedy series The Thin Blue Line in which Inspector Grimm aspires to become a member of the Most Honorable Order of Todgers, the initiation for which involves kissing a stuffed turkey's arse. Presumably if your boss told you that he needed to practice for that ceremony, you would be daft enough to take that seriously as well.

Interesting, too, that you should be so arrogantly dismissive of robed and bemedalled Masons raising thirty million quid a year for charity.

I'm a member of the Royal British Legion and I'll be wearing my old RAF blazer, tie, badges and beret at 11am next Saturday and leading the local  ceremony (ritual, if you wish) of Remembrance at the war memorial as the culmination of my own year-long work in raising money for service-related charities.

Perhaps you would like to ridicule me and my work too.

even knowing that its mere ritual and only of historical value, once used in a real sense it has no place in te modern world and is irrelevant to it....

rather like those passages in the koran that demand that pagans be put to death etc....

its all context isnt it

but of course not , not to a lefty, who wants context in one place but not in another as the mood suits....

They're basically RPG nerds, right? When you get down to it.

But you're right about the left/right thing. I've always said this, if right-wingers want to settle down in a nice suburb and have a nice little house with a nice little family, more power to them. I just don't see where they get the right to tell a couple of gay people that they can't get married and share an apartment in the city, or a house in the suburbs, or do whatever the fuck they want to.

The liberal ethos is live and let live, so long as nobody's getting hurt because of it. The conservative ethos is forcing people to live a life they don't support or agree with. It's the exact opposite of freedom to:

* Tell people of different races they can't marry

* Tell people of the same sex they can't marry

* Tell a woman what to do with her own body

* Tell people of a certain ethnicity or religion they're unwelcome

Yet conservatives pretend to be the guardians of freedom. They're the ultimate guardians of social control, trying to dictate where and how you live out your life, on the basis of pure fuckery.
