On Monday, after a weekend of breathless waiting for the other shoe to drop, special counsel Robert Mueller filed charges against former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort on a 12-count indictment including “conspiracy against the United States, conspiracy to launder money, acting as an unregistered foreign agent,” and other financial transaction-related crimes.

The indictment says that Manafort funneled over $75 million through his offshore account, and essentially laundered over $18 million.

Here’s the good news for Trump: nothing in the indictment suggests collusion between Trump and the Russian government.

Here’s the bad news for Trump: Manafort was a horrible pick from the beginning for campaign manager, and that pick will smear mud on the Trump campaign even if Trump had nothing to do with Manafort’s illegal behavior.

The indictment centers almost entirely around Manafort’s alleged illegal lobbying and money laundering activities between 2006 and 2014, since Manafort’s money source was the Ukrainian Party of Regions, which dissolved in 2014 with the ouster of Viktor Yanukovych.

The indictment alleges that Manafort and Richard Gates III, his right hand, worked as “unregistered agents of the Government of Ukraine … generated tens of millions of dollars in income as a result of their Ukraine work.”

They then “laundered the money through scores of United States and foreign corporations, partnerships, and bank accounts.” Manafort and Gates didn’t register as foreign agents, which they apparently were.

And “Manafort used his hidden overseas wealth to enjoy a lavish lifestyle in the United States, without paying taxes on that income.”

The period of defrauding the government continued through 2017, according to the indictment: “Between in or around 2008 and 2017, both dates being approximate and inclusive … Manafort and Gates devised and intended to devise, and executed and attempted to execute, a scheme and artifice to defraud, and to obtain money and property by means of false and fraudulent pretenses, representations, and promises from the United States, bank, and other financial institutions.”

They allegedly wired millions through other companies for purposes of laundering through 2014. Manafort also bought properties with offshore money in order to take loans against the property to boost his lifestyle.

The charge of “conspiracy against the United States” isn’t a treason charge — it’s a financial charge based on defrauding the United States and covering it up through obstruction of justice.

The media are going to have a tough time linking Manafort to Trump and Trump to Russia thereby, at least from the charges in this indictment. There’s literally nothing about collusion; there’s literally nothing about Trump. This is about Manafort, which could suggest that Mueller wants to flip Manafort against Trump — or it could be that Manafort is going to go down for his alleged nefarious activities over the period of the last decade and a half.

But the Russian collusion narrative has not been forwarded by this indictment.

Nah, Wolf and eds are right.  Trump is panicked at this point.

Trump knows Manafort because the two are co-money-launderers for the Russians.  These initial charges are for Manafort's independent money-laundering activities.  But if the Special Counsel is going to go after one money-launderer, why would he leave the chief money-launderer alone?  I mean, a Special Counsel didn't get appointed to go after ordinary criminals.  

Also, note the lingering charge in the indictment: "conspiracy against the United States".  The last big-time case for espionage was the Rosenbergs, and you know that history...also involved the Russians...tricky bastards, them tutu-dancers! Portends great possibilities down the road, eh?

These charges don't even raise the lingering charges associated with obstruction of justice re: email theft.  Trump aide George Papadopoulos has already pleaded guilty to that one:

Nor does the indictment address the meeting in Trump Tower on May 9, 2016, attended by Manafort, Donald Jr. and son-in-law Kushner.  Son and son-in-law...if that doesn't start the WH knees a-shakin', it's only because he's pissin' in his pants.

I'll bet Kushner gets served with divorce papers, and turns on his lyin' father-in-law.

George told the FBI he'd met with some blowhard Russian professor well before he signed up to be a foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign.

Turns out, he joined the campaign before he met the professor, and the professor is well-connected with Russian government officials, and there was mutual interest in hacking Hillary Clinton's emails.

Now that would be two conspiracies -- one, to commit wire fraud and two, to use the resources of a foreign (and hostile) government to influence the U.S. election.

If Trump knew, he could go down, too. But I'm sure he had no idea, of course ...



Finally, let's not downplay Manafort and Gates too awfully much, especially seeing as their crimes continued through 2016 (at least), meaning they were committing them while working for Trump (and in Manafort's case, actually living in Trump Tower).

Yes, I mentioned the George Papadopoulos indictment above.  But, as you said Ben, the connection cannot yet be made.  Probably, the indictment of George Papadopoulos  is for purposes of intimidation.  The charge of lying to a federal agent is usually used, when you know the witness is lying, to show you are serious and negotiate confessions of a greater sort.

Finally, indictments are usually itemized and singular and chronologically based.  They haven't gotten to the event of the May 9th meeting yet.  Though, this indictment indicates it's coming.

The crimes that aren't itemized and singular, are the conspiracy allegations.  They necessarily involve multiple acts...called overt acts in furthance.  Now you see my excitement over the conspiracy against the United States count.

This is going to end up as a huge RICO (racketeering) indictment.  That's a good thing, because there is a parallel New York 'mini-RICO' on the books, and Trump can't pardon state law.

REPORT: Unnamed Company In Mueller Indictment Is Clinton-Connected Podesta Group

One of the two unnamed companies in the grand jury indictment of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his deputy, Rick Gates, is reportedly the Podesta Group — a lobbying firm with strong ties to Hillary Clinton.

The indictment, unsealed on Monday, lists two unnamed companies — “Company A” and “Company B” — as firms that Manafort and Gates approached in 2012 to lobby for the pro-Putin Ukrainian government. “Company A” is Mercury Public Affairs and “Company B” is the Podesta Group, NBC News reported.

The far-left Podesta Group was founded by Democratic lobbyist Tony Podesta, who is the brother of Hillary Clinton’s former campaign chairman John Podesta. The firm came under fire for not disclosing its work lobbying for the Ukrainian government under the Foreign Agents Registrant Act (FARA).

The indictment indicated that the Podesta Group and Mercury Public Affairs received $2 million from offshore accounts controlled by Manafort for their work lobbying members of Congress about Ukraine sanctions and the validity of Ukraine elections.

Tony Podesta stepped down from the Podesta Group on Monday, nearly 30 years after founding the firm.

“[Tony] was very magnanimous and said, ‘This is an amazing group of people’,” a source told Politico, speaking of Podesta’s remarks. “Podesta also told staff he ‘doesn’t intend to go quietly, or learn how to play golf.’ He said he ‘needs to fight this as an individual, but doesn’t want the firm to fight it.’”

He is.  This claim is missing one crucial detail.  Notice it's all conclusory?  No home could be the subject of a warrant if they feared privileged documents might be found.  Prosecutors have well-established procedures for sealing such seized materials. There's nothing about precautions taken...it's all speculative: could have, who knows, perhaps.
