After a violent weekend of suspected gang-related shootings, Tuesday the Sacramento City Council took action to reduce the bloodshed.

It approved a controversial program called Advance Peace, which offers cash stipends to gang members who remain peaceful.

“Let’s get going on doing everything we can to save innocent lives,” Steinberg said.

The program targets key gang agitators, offering them cash stipends to graduate school and remain peaceful. It already claims success in dropping crime rates in Richmond. But the city would still have to pay half the cost of the program, $1.5 million out of the city’s general fund.

Well, they pay farmers not to grow. So it's not something we've not seen before:

It just goes to show you, there's welfare for the rich and welfare for the poor. Republicans tried to support farmers to support a rural way of life. They still do it...only now, the huge welfare payouts go into the coffers of Con-Agriga, General Mills, BASF, Chiquita Brands International, Del Monte Produce, Golden State Foods, Monsanto, and many more.

All receive subsidies from the United States Department of Agriculture, not to grow anymore food!! Oh, but there is good news: the Department of Agriculture did cut out Food Stamps for the poor and school lunches for growing children.

Well given that most crime stems from poverty (not that that entirely excuses it, but it does explain it) perhaps by making these payments the poverty can be alleviated and thus crime reduced????

Actually, they find it much more remunerative to invest in oil, start wars, and end up with exclusive rights to territorial resources.

well now, perhaps, in order to manage that we should make sure the idle workshy rich pay their proper due in taxation, especially in those industries where IT has taken over in order to ensure that the few manpower intensive industries thrive and expand.

HALF (at least) of the revenue produced by a robot should be taken in tax

I did what anybody in Sacramento could do...

I did a quick internet search for 'jobs in Sacramento' and saw one jobsite showed over 17000 available jobs...

There is always work available for young fit & healthy men to do... lifting/carrying, loading, packing, delivering etc...

If they cared about the local area and people and wanted it to be a nice and pleasant and safe place to live... then they would be acting like nice and pleasant people, and doing their best to make it so... and doing their best to be working...

People who think Obama didn't do a great job, should take a look at the numbers. He did an astounding job taking unemployment from 10% with the Republicans, to around 4% at the close of his term. There were so many jobs that that employers were hanging banners out there, advertising for workers. Even the US Postal Service--and you know how well they pay.

Sacramento is the state capitol of what happens to be the wealthiest state in the nation, and the equivalent of the 5th-wealthiest nation in the world. There are always jobs in Sacramento. Available jobs is not the issue.

And, of course, Tommy is immune to the basic fact that so many entry-level, labouring, and transitory jobs have disappeared over the last 30 -->> 40 years or so...

Largely due to Reaganomics/"Trickle Down" supply-side bullshit policies, big business "off-shoring"
so many jobs; and ever-increasing mechanisation and automation of former factory and farming jobs..

Poor people usually don't live anywhere near where the available jobs are; many bosses aren't prepared to train workers any more -- but would rather poach from others..

Then there's the costs of retraining workers these days -- when workers have to pay for it themselves, those costs have gone up much faster than inflation. And what about a "living wage" for workers -- I wonder how hard Tommy would work for $7an hour ? And I wonder how many of those jobs Tommy found were located 50, 60 miles or more away from where they live..

As always, Tommy insists on "blaming the victims" (of economic and societal collapse in this case..), and defending the multi-faceted causes of the problems...

No, there are many who do not do an honest day's work. They are called capitalists. They remove the tools of production, and force labor to produce the products using the stolen tools. Then they sell the products at an inflated price (whatever the market will bear), making what they call profit.

Really, they are doing nothing but stealing the talent and effort of the workers, in the form of the final product. If the capitalists could charge more on the market, they should give the money to the owners of the talent and effort, for the latter really produced the product. The capitalists are the thieves...the only difference is they dress nicely and drive pretty cars. And you are in that margin of stupid people who fall for it:
