Fourteen dead as violence erupts among devotees of India's 'guru of bling' following rape conviction

Fourteen people have died and dozens more injured in India's northern Haryana state, as violent protests erupted after a court convicted a self-styled "God man" of raping two women, angering thousands of his followers. Police in Panchkula, where the sentence was pronounced on Friday afternoon, reportedly fired live rounds to disperse supporters of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, 50.
Police also fired tear gas in an attempt to contain tens of thousands of the controversial guru Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's agitated followers across Haryana and neighbouring Punjab states. The violence later spread to Delhi, where a bus was set on fire.
"Fourteen people have died and 80 were injured," a medical officer at the government hospital in the northern city of Panchkula told AFP.
