New Channel 4 documentary to show methods of anti-gay gang violence in Russia

In a forthcoming Channel 4 Dispatches documentary, “shocking” footage of the methods used by anti-gay groups in Russia will be broadcast as part of the lead up to the Sochi Winter Olympics.

According to the Guardian, ‘Hunted’ is to be broadcast on Wednesday at 10pm, in the run up to the Sochi Winter Olympics starting on Friday.

The documentary follows members of the anti-gay groups Occupy Paedophilia and Parents of Russia, and documents the methods they use to intimidate and humiliate their victims.

Liz Mackean, the investigative journalist who travelled to Russia to make the documentary, said: “We filmed these groups with their knowledge, and what I found shocking afterwards was that only a few asked to have their faces disguised. They all believe they are doing the right thing.

“Occupy Paedophilia has groups in more than 30 cities. They operate with impunity and under the cover of the remarks Putin has made suggesting that children are at risk from homosexuals.”

President Vladimir Putin said earlier last year that the country’s ban on “homosexual propaganda” was put in place to protect children.

The documentary shows how gangs use the internet to lure potential victims to meetings, before threatening violence to force confessions or humiliating acts from them. One victim is forced to dance while the gang films them for the internet.

Tom Porter, commissioning editor for the documentary, said: ”Occupy Paedophilia deliberately blurs the lines between paedophilia and homosexuality.

“During one of the filmed incidents of humiliation, the group asked our cameraman and director, Ben Steele, to stop filming, but he continued partly because he was concerned that if he stopped there would be violence.”

In one other sequence, Parents of Russia member Timur Isav is shown attending an LGBT event while handing out bags containing a length of rope, suggesting that they use it to hang themselves.

Mr Porter also commented on Channel 4′s decision to broadcast the Paralympic Winter Games in March.

He said: ”It just shows the way a broad channel like Channel 4 can exist. We are doing our investigation, while over in sport they are doing the Winter Games.”

Ms Mackean said the gay Russians she interviewed were against a boycott of the Games, as they feared it would lead to an increase in violence and hostility.

In July last year, Occupy Paedophilia took to social media to publicise images and videos of gay teenagers lured in on the promise of a date, before torturing them and forcing them to come out to friends and family on video.

An uncensored image of one of the victims holding a sex toy, covered in red paint, and being held down, appeared on the Spectrum Human Rights Alliance blog.

The accompanying report also included a video of the torture of one victim who was sprayed with urine in public, however YouTube has now removed the video.

The Spectrum reported that no police action was taken against the incidents, despite numerous victims, and that over 500 similar groups had been formed across Russia using the VK social networking site.

Former Labour MP and Europe minister Denis MacShane had called on Mr Cameron to personally boycott the 2014 Winter Olympics in protest at President Vladimir Putin’s “rank homophobia”.

“The PM believes in engagement. He doesn’t think that boycotts and grand gestures achieve much,” a government source told The Independent.

PinkNews revealed reccently that Sports Minister Helen Grant is highly likely to attend the Winter Olympics, along with her boss, Culture Secretary Maria Miller. Mrs Grant is also a junior Equalities minister at the Government Equalities Office (GEO). Mrs Miller is also Minister for Women and Equalities, the most senior member of the GEO.

In December, US President Barack Obama named several gay sports stars as part of America’s delegation to the Winter Olympics in Russia – but in a significant move confirmed that he will not be attending the event himself.

For the first time since 2000, the US will also not send a president, former president, first lady or vice president to the Winter Olympics.

This is really disturbing stuff, and good on channel four for bringing this issue up to the wider public attention.

More pressure needs to be put on Russia to do something about these terrible crimes, surely there is more that could be done to reign them in, perhaps some kind of sanctions etc.

TV star Paul O’Grady will attend tonight’s London rally against Russia’s anti-gay laws, organisers have announced.

The gay comedian and entertainer, who presents shows on the BBC and ITV, is known for being a vocal and passionate campaigner on LGBT rights.

The event, which lasts from 6pm-7pm, is being organised by online campaign group All Out and the Peter Tatchell Foundation.

It is designed to raise awareness of political homophobia in Russia before the start of the Winter Olympics.

The rally will take place opposite Downing Street in Whitehall.

It is part of a ‘Global Speak Out’ that is taking place today in cities around the world.

Speaking at the first Whitehall protest against Russia’s anti-gay laws last August, Stephen Fry said that athletes taking part in the Winter Olympics should perform a simple gesture to show their solidarity with the LGBT community.

The gay actor, author and comedian told PinkNews that people should also “mock” President Vladimir Putin.

Last month, President Vladimir Putin claimed gay people would be welcome in Sochi, providing they “just leave the children alone”.

The Games begin in the Russian city of Sochi on Friday.

Hopefully this will get some media attention.

They should never have picked Russia for the venue; very ill-thought out, or more probably money changing hands. Same as the Qatar Football. If I were gay I'd think more than twice about going to Russia.

I think the international liberal community are being very harsh on certain countries.

Just because we chose a certain path very recently doesn't mean everybody else must do it straight away.

Things take time - this is only happening because of 24 hour global media.

Leave them alone, they will follow eventually, if their citizens want it.

The games will go ahead & will be a great success for the athletes,the Russians & the rest of the world.

No one in their right minds are going to be bothered by a few silly gay extremists who hate straight people.

Gay people are beaten up in the UK purely for being gay but there were no calls for the UK Olympics to be scrapped nor were there any gay pressure groups screaming for the Olympics to be banned.

This latest trend is a bit of anti Russian propaganda instigated by the UK & US governments because they are jealous of how well Russia as a nation is doing.Additionally,the western governments are jealous because Mr.Putin is a man who has some lead in his pencil & is a strong leader.

When he is compared to the spineless wimps known as Cameron & Obama it's easy to understand why they are throwing so much flak at him.......And what's the wests secret weapon to use against Russia on this occasion? ....A few bloody woofters.

How about the actual abused? Did they ever cross your mind? Perhaps persecuted Christians in places like Egypt and Pakistan should just shut up too and we should let those countries run themselves how they choose to? I actually disagree, I think Christians in Egypt have as much right to global attention regarding their plight as do gays in Russia.

I've been watching the program in the OP, and it's been very harrowing.

One interesting comment, that i heard, was that the authorities over there have promoted this abuse because peoples living standards are falling, so to direct the fallout away from the authorities...They are promoting people turning against each other.

That struck a chord with me, because that's exactly what the government is doing in this country, but in our case it is against the poor and benefit claimants.

and they still don’t report all of them, the problem is, if for a minutes there is nothing 'better' to report they will throw it out there.

The problem is there are too many minutes when not much is happening so we see topic being driven into the ground through repetition and people switch off.

Look at the Anti-foreigner stuff some of the RW post, can you see how people go 'ohh another of the same...boring' and turn away. The over reporting of abuse has the same effect on some people.

I don't think it's being over reported, certainly not the abuses in the OP, perhaps i should have set up a separate thread with regards to the Sochi olympics post.

...But i'm still of the opinion that the abuses in Russia should be reported as much as possible, but one chilling thing that i learnt from watching that program in the OP, was that once the cameras are gone, and after the olympics, the authorities will clamp down more on gay people.

It's a difficult call to make, but things are bad enough already over there, so i can't see them getting any worse tbf.
