Prevent criticism 'stems from ignorance' Empty Prevent criticism 'stems from ignorance'

One of Scotland Yard's most senior police officers says criticism of the government's Prevent programme is based on "ignorance".

It was set up to stop people being drawn into terrorist activities, but has been labelled "toxic" by critics.
"They don't understand properly how Prevent works," Commander head Haydon told the BBC's Asian Network.
He added that some criticism came from parts of the community that "don't want Prevent to work in the first place".
The programme was set up by Labour in 2003 and its remit was widened by the Conservative-Lib Dem coalition in 2011.
Designed to support people at risk of joining extremist groups and carrying out terrorist activities, it is focused on schools, faith organisations, prisons and other communities where people can be at risk of radicalisation.

Yeah, I can see the problem.  They are using political views to profile citizens, hoping to redirect peoples opinions.  "Designed to support people at risk of joining extremist groups..." is an open invitation to mess in their political and religions beliefs.  Redirecting opinion is for political parties, not the police.

It could easily be misused by the police, siding with one side or the other to influence politics...particularly anti-Muslim politics.  Of course, it's no wonder the Muslim community is complaining; it's their ox that is being gored this time.

But the real danger is, involving the police in matters of politics is inherently dangerous.  With all their guns and potential use of force, that is what police states do: like, Vote Tory, or I'll kill you!!  Vladimir Putin is doing this every day, right before our eyes.

You've got to be careful not to mix authority with freedom of opinion...that is, if you want to keep and open and free society.
