Jeremy Corbyn's promise to scrap student debts would cost at least £100billion, Labour's shadow education secretary admitted today. Angela Rayner insisted it was an 'ambition' for the party but that it would not become a manifesto pledge until Labour finds a way to pay for it. Just days before last month's general election, Mr Corbyn said he wanted a way to tackle the 'historical misfortune' of those burdened with student debts - promising he would 'deal with it'. Labour campaigned on a platform of scrapping all tuition fees for new students and the party's success has shifted debate on the issue. But Ms Rayner admitted today there was no evidence fees were putting working class children off university altogether, as has been frequently claimed by Mr Corbyn.

Even the tories are rethinking college fees.  The demise they predicted for Corbyn, which never happened, and the collapse in their own votes have forced them to go back to the drawing board and they are looking at other options. Nothing is set in stone yet.

You can free education for the academically gifted which is free, or education for the masses which isn't. The reason it was free before was so few actually were clever enough to get in. then some bright spark called blair said everyone needs a degree and costs rocketed and degrees were needed to be a cleaner.
Medical degree's should perhaps be free with costs being taken by several years service in the NHS on completion.

do we really need to be offering free media studies degree's and the like though.
But to put things in perspective

when they hit £22grand they pay £7 a month, not exactly a fortune, a couple of pints or a packet of fags a month

Remember those that dont pay it off in 30 years get it wiped out anyway.

I think that if we were to be honest, very few of us would not like to see an end to tuition fees as well as shedloads more money for the police, fire service, elderly care, disability benefit, housing benefit, house building, living wages, transport and - above all - the NHS.

But what puzzles me is just how many people fell for the "costings" of all of it which will apparently be met by "asking only the richest in society to pay just a little bit more" and racking up business taxation to an extent that would inevitably lead to massive job losses and company bankruptcies.

I have pointed this out several times, Corbyn was gordon brown bad, not ed miliband bad when it comes to failure. the still lost by a large margin after getting out the yoof and tactical voting and we still have a tory gov.
His success is down to having the bar set so low for his expectations.

I don't know you at all, but the few times you have spoken to me, you've done so in a civil and polite manner , so I will always reply when you speak to me (....if I have an answer, that is).  


Back on topic, I'd say we all put our own individual spin on things, DYK.
Some would look at those election results and say it was an unmitigated disaster for the tories. No one saw it coming!!
Then again you can put a gloss on it and say "well at least she is still in power". *shrug*
