I call on my fellow Muslims to stop blaming VICTIMS of child sex gangs: Lawyer who helped jail the Rochdale grooming gang calls to end violent misogyny he says 'excuses these monsters'
- Nazir Afzal, a prosecutor in the Rochdale scandal, writes for the Mail on Sunday
- Afzal says Asian and Pakistani men are disproportionately involved in grooming
- He claims Muslim audiences refuse to talk about how to deal with these crimes
- Muslim Council of Britain only wanted to dicuss in hate crime and Islamophobia
It’s often said the wheels of justice grind slowly. But after failing rape victims for years, swift change was forced upon the courts following the Rochdale grooming scandal. New guidelines were introduced making it easier to prosecute cases and dispelling myths about what constituted a ‘credible’ witness. The practice of traumatised children being cross-examined in court by half a dozen different barristers was abolished. Children can now provide evidence in pre-recorded cross-examinations to be played to the jury once a trial starts. And judges must take specialist training to preside over complex child abuse cases. Even the police now require a licence and specialist training to investigate this crime. These are some of the changes that have seen the law start to close in on paedophiles and finally give their victims a voice. They’re also the kind of changes that first motivated me to go into law, to erase the shame of not standing up against injustices that marked my childhood.

I'm just watching The Betrayed Girls on BBC1 and it makes for shocking viewing. One of the social workers involved in the case, took it to her local Labour Muslim MP in the hope that he'd take the list of names of the men to the local mosque. He did. The imam and his council confirmed the identity of the men and then told the MP, 'this is nothing to do with us.' and sent him on his way. The Muslim community closed ranks. Those who spoke out against it got accused of betraying their own Muslim community.
One poor girl had two men, one raping her, and another holding a razor to her throat while he forced himself into her mouth. She was vomiting at the same time.
The police turned a blind eye for fear of being un-PC. Nobody dared speak out.

Now BBC Documentary The Betrayed Girls focuses on the real people at the heart of the story, some of whom are speaking for the first time.
The 90 minute documentary features the harrowing testimony of victims whose stories have not been told before and includes interviews with those brave enough to speak out on behalf of the girls, including manager of the Rochdale Crisis Intervention Team Sara Rowbotham, former Detective Constable Maggie Oliver and chief prosecutor Nazir Afzal.
The programme also examines how it was not just the professionals whose job it was to look after the girls that looked away. It points out many from the police, social services, Muslim community and political sphere also ignored their plight.
The gang of nine men received jail sentences of between four and 19 years from a judge who said they treated their victims “as though they were worthless and beyond any respect”.

I watched the programme too. It highlighted the disgusting way the young girls were treated by animals, and also the way they were let down so badly by the authorities.
The police chief who spoke outside court after the nine paedophiles had been sent down, spoke earnestly about how justice had been served.....he was the same cowardly bastard who had refused to act for years when the girls had spoken out previously about the abuse.

people seem to think that after rotherham and rochdale this all went away. It is continuing to this day and needs to be dealt with. It is the Pakistani community that are to blame. Those perpetrators needs to be tracked down, charged and deported where possible.
Until the pakistani community understands that 7th century practices are not compatible with the 21st century western lifestyle it will keep on happening and the police and others will keep letting it.
