The children who think pasta comes from animals and eggs come from cows: Youngsters appalling lack of knowledge of food sources revealed by research
Many children have such appalling knowledge of food sources they believe pasta comes from animals and cows produce eggs, according to new research. More than a quarter of primary school children think cheese originates from plants while one in 10 teenagers say fruit pastels are healthy. The findings have been revealed by the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF), which insists teachers need more support to widen children’s knowledge of nutrition beyond what they manage to glean online.
The BNF surveyed 5,040 children aged five to 16-year-old as part of its annual Healthy Eating Week.

Those results don't surprise me in the least...
Occasional surveys down here over the last few decades by various food marketing groups and nutritionists' associations have delivered similar findings..
Yet another sign of the growing "disconnect" between many people in modern cities and the natural world outside their often sheltered, 'cocooned' and cloistered existence.
As a group, Primary school teachers are among the last people on the planet I would listen to when it comes to food, nutrition and health topics -- unlike some specialist high school teachers (e.g. Home ec./Domestic science, PE, Biology, Agriculture..) food production and nutrition subjects simply aren't part of their Infants/Primary teacher college training..

Apart from the fact that many modern mums cant be arsed cooking proper meals anymore.. the main problem imo is that so many families don't sit down and have meals together anymore. Meals where everyone talked and discussed everthing that had happened that day, including what they were eating .I even know of families who even if they have a kitchen/dining table don't use it...they eat separately, kids in rooms parents with tray on knee in another room.
One more family value that's being eroded by 'modern day life'.

I agree Syl.
When we all sat together the day was discussed, what we did at school etc and I did this with mine. My daughter does it with hers. The kitchen table is the hub of the house and should all sit and converse and eat together.

Exactly.....now we have grandkids we don't have lots of rules, but one I stick to when they are here or we are out is we eat together, and no one gets their phones or ipods (or whatever other gadgets they seem surgically attached to) out at meal times.
Right, off out to bring a little joy into other peoples lives...cant stand around gabbing to you all day.

We have 100 different words for automobile, but only one for snow. A recent survey showed that the Inuits of Canada, aka Eskimos, have over 100 different words for snow, but only one for the automobile. Language relates to your environment and the kind of life you live.
In the 20th-century we passed from an agrarian society to a predominately industrial society. Now we don't know a chicken's ass from it's volvo.

Re the article: I can well believe it. I know many parents who don't cook proper meals and more importantly, they don't cook with their young children! I love it when my children help me cook! It's a great way for them to learn what each ingredient is and taste some vegetables raw too.
My son is one of the only teens I know who can actually work the oven and cook himself a proper dinner if there's an odd occasion I'm not at home or it's late at night and he decides to eat again.
As a family we have always sat down at a proper table and eaten together. It's just a nicer way to eat.

That's what I missed growing up. Spices and herbs...I've had to learn what each is, and how it flavors a dish (ie, how to use it). I've even bought a book on that specific subject.
But my cooking life has been one of discovery...and it's been fun.

I think its one of the nicest things in the day when you are a family, to sit down, eat, chat and just share time together.
Its a shame that so many people don't do it now. There was a discussion once on a forum where the topic was similar, some women were posting that that's all very well, but A...they work and don't have time to cook meals from scratch so rely on ready meals or processed rubbish, and B...they cant afford fresh food.

Let me know when your restaurant is opening up over there in the US and I'll come and sample your dishes.

SF is a restaurant city. They would put me to shame, even though in Philadelphia I would be a gourmet chef.
