Generally, yes. Corn is a grain. Corn whiskey is an American liquor made from a mash of at least 80 percent corn and distilled to a maximum strength of 160 proof.
Soils are perfect for corn in America. Corn is the grain of the American south...witness the fact that southerners are called crackers, after the high content of cracked corn in their diet. Ever heard of southern grits? Corn is easy to distill into whiskey, and therefore it's a favorite for back-country, illegal stills, which are the source of "moonshine" (the term refers to making whiskey under the light of the moon, out and away from the detection of government revenuers).
But Rye and barley and wheat are also used in American whiskey. Bourbon must be only 51% corn, with rye, wheat and barley also mixed in. Canadian whiskey is generally a 'light whiskey' made primarily, or predominately of rye.
