Bipartisan anger grows over Russia's subversion of American self-determination Empty Bipartisan anger grows over Russia's subversion of American self-determination

Post by Ben Reilly Mon Dec 12, 2016 3:40 pm

WASHINGTON ― A growing number of senators on both sides of the aisle are calling for investigations into Russian involvement in the U.S. election process.

“I think we need to get to the bottom of it,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said in a Sunday morning interview with ABC’s “This Week. “And I think there should be an investigation because in order to defend ourselves against other adversarial countries, we have to protect our information.”

The CIA concluded in a secret assessment that Russia interfered in the U.S. election not merely to mess around with the democratic system but to more specifically help Donald Trump win the presidency, according to a recent report in The Washington Post.

“It is the assessment of the intelligence community that Russia’s goal here was to favor one candidate over the other, to help Trump get elected,” said a senior U.S. official familiar with the findings. “That’s the consensus view.”

On Sunday morning, a bipartisan group of high-ranking senators released a statement underscoring the severity of these revelations and urging Republicans and Democrats to take them seriously.

“Democrats and Republicans must work together, and across the jurisdictional lines of the Congress, to examine these recent incidents thoroughly and devise comprehensive solutions to deter and defend against further cyberattacks,” read the statement from Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee; Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), an Armed Services Committee member; Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), the incoming minority leader for his caucus; and Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.), the ranking member on the Armed Services Committee.

“This cannot become a partisan issue,” they added. “The stakes are too high for our country. We are committed to working in this bipartisan manner, and we will seek to unify our colleagues around the goal of investigating and stopping the grave threats that cyberattacks conducted by foreign governments pose to our national security.”

I would hardly call it "anger". Look into it, fine. It's more important than Hillary's emails.

However, I don't like the suggestion by John McCain of a bi-partisan effort. Democrats should never be caught fraternizing with Republicans. They kill babies.

Abortions = a Liberal thing that kills babies. Lots of them. Especially in lower income black communities.

Don't hold your corrupt Liberal ideology above another corrupt one. You're both equally pathetic.

Russia decided the American election and the squawking is about abortions?
No wonder Putin has a spring in his step!

We defeated Nazi Germany but the Germans took over Europe anyway. America tore itself up over communism with witch hunts but is getting a Russian picked leader anyway.
It would be funny if it wasn't so scary

@Ben
Just because I represent the the millions of others that squashed Hillary's dreams of becoming president doesn't make me (or the other millions of Independents) Republicans. It makes us smart enough to know better than to vote for a corrupt career politician with a huge trust deficit.

Trump is a New York Democrat, through and through. You'd be laughed off your own site if you called him a Conservative, and you've be equally laughed at if you called him a Liberal. He's about as centrist of a President as you can get, these days. The number of Democrats he's opened his doors to and have nominated for cabinet positions is unprecedented.

Most Independents voted for Trump, too. They Republicans, too, for voting for a NY Dem?

I think you are a slave of dichotomous, bi-polar thinking...Democrat or Republican, or somewhere in the middle.  I believe that Trump represents a third, iconoclastic front: populist, nationalist and racist.

Unfortunately, this front has been around in disorganized fashion since the south lost the Civil War.  They filled out the ranks of the KKK.  They opposed racial integration at the University of Arkansas.  They are the gun toters of the NRA.  They were the Weaver/Harris klan at Ruby Ridge.  They were the biker gangs that congregated at the Twin Peaks restaurant in Waco, Texas.  They were Cliven Bundy and his supporters at Bunkerville, Nevada.  Where once they were the 'they' in the 'We/They' perspective in the press, they have become the 'we' of the Trump model.

Trump adeptly molded them into his Trumpsters to get elected, and then like Nigel Farage, abandoned the dirty, luckless tramps after he got elected.  Trump was everything he campaigned against: liar, cheater, double-talking, two-timing Washington insider, who will do anything to get the ring, and run away to his gold-lined room in the back.

It's all in my book, Why Elephants Lie.

Quill said it well. I'd just add that Trump is quite obviously an authoritarian, which is something the American right embraces and craves, and I think that's why they voted for them. They're scared little children who want someone to fuck the bad guys to death:

Umm...but consider this: the authoritarian personality is also a highly submissive personality.  According to Adorno, et al, The Authoritarian Personality, authoritarian submissiveness and authoritarian aggressiveness are simply two sides to the same coin.

I think we saw evidence of this submissiveness in Trump in his meeting with el Presidente Peña Nieto of Mexico, and again in those church meetings with clergy in Detroit (when they told him to shut up).  The authoritarian aggressiveness becomes authoritarian hand-wringing in confrontations that humble the person.

I mention this because I am highly suspicious of what will come of Trump's bromance with Putin.  We have seen in his thin-skin that Trump is not very steady in the face of authority.  I think we've got a milquetoast in the White House.

Idea

IVANKA clearly doesn't understand the degrees of the "political spectrum"...

The Dumpster may sit to the left of Hillary Clinton on many economic and social issues,  but both of them are "centre right" on the political spectrum (as is Putin, as well -- it's just that Trump and Putin are well north into the "authoritarian" quadrant, whereas Hillary is just south into the "libertarian zone".. ), if one were to take a more honest 'internationalist' viewpoint of their posturings..

Republicans won the Civil War and the freedom for all slaves. The KKK was formed by Democrats that didn't like the outcome of the war because they, the Democrats, promoted slavery and opposed every measure to ensure equal and civil rights to African Americans for the next 100 years.

You like to hate, don't you?  I feel bad for you.  You must have poor relationships.

No, Republicans after the Civil War went into a funk of corruption and decay, and only came out with something meaningful in the post-WW II election.  For a while during the turn of the century some of them played with social Darwinism, but once slavery ended they lost the passion for any dedicated humanist politics.

Republicanism was founded by northeastern mercantile and manufacturing interests, and the other thread they had was economic self-interest...what I call autonomous-individualism. In the wake of Richard Nixon they seemed to pick up on this and run.  Long story short, this has culminated with the election of Trump.

All of the pieces are ripe...so far from proving politics is a business, I believe Trump's era will expose all that is wrong with modern capitalism, particularly in the global arena.  Having a raw conservative capitalist, and watching him closely (as is inevitable), will teach us the difference between a successful businessman and a successful politician...and it will revolve around the amorality of capitalism.

I see a total economic collapse...that is, if Trump's conflicts of interest don't bring him down beforehand.

All those words... and nothing to back them up.  I hope you didn't get your education in history from the same place you got your Doctor Lawyer.  Hehe.

Fear not.
Here's some light (and enlightening) reading for you.  You're welcome.

- In 1857, a Democratically controlled Supreme Court delivered the Dred Scott decision, declaring that blacks were not persons or citizens but instead were property and therefore had no rights.

- The 13th Amendment to abolish slavery was voted for by 100% of the Republicans in congress and by 23% of the Democrats in congress.

- Not one Democrat either in the House or the Senate voted for the 14th amendment declaring that former slaves were full citizens of the state in which they lived and were therefore entitled to all the rights and privileges of any other citizen in that state.

- Not a single one of the 56 Democrats in Congress voted for the 15th amendment that granted explicit voting rights to black Americans.

- In 1866 Democrats formed the Ku Klux Klan to pave the way for Democrats to regain control in the elections.

- In the 19th century, Democrats prevented Black Americans from going to public school.

- In the 20th and 21st century Democrats prevented Black Americans trapped in failing schools from choosing a better school. In fact Democrats voted against the bill by 99%.

- Jim Crow laws, poll taxes, grandfather clauses, Literacy tests, white only primaries, and physical violence all came from the Democratic Party.

- Between 1882 and 1964, 4,743 individuals were lynched. 3,446 blacks and 1,297 whites. Republicans often led the efforts to pass federal anti-lynching laws and Democrats successfully blocked those bills.

- Though both the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 were signed into law under Democrat President, Lyndon Johnson, it was the Republicans in Congress who made it possible in both cases – not to overlook the fact that the heart of both bills came from the work of Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

- In the 108th Congress, when Republicans proposed a permanent extension of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, it was opposed by the Congressional Black Caucus (composed only of Democrats).

- In 1789, Congress passed the Northwest Ordinance that prohibited slavery in a federal territory.  In 1820, the Democratic Congress passed the Missouri Compromise and reversed that earlier policy, permitting slavery in almost half of the federal territories.

- In 1850, Democrats in Congress passed the “Fugitive Slave Law”.  That law required Northerners to return escaped slaves back into slavery or else pay huge fines.

And, let's not forget about what Dr. Martin Luther King fought hard for:
More Republicans voted in favor of the Civil Rights Act than Democrats

Hahaha...I'll bet you've been collecting those factoids and saving them up in anticipation for the next time I deign to discuss history with you.  Two posts up, you were beggin' me to engage in a discussion about which party was against slavery.  You didn't even notice I ignored you...you went ahead with your treasure trove of cherry-picked facts anyway, carried away with your childish enthusiasm.  Haha...so typical of you.  You never pay attention to what's going on.

Most of your culled factoids refer to the period after the Civil War to 1952, when the Republicans stood for nothing except greed and corruption.  The modern Republican bears little resemblance to those empty years...Republicans only woke up at the Goldwater cycle, and then they stumbled so badly with Nixon.  Most of what you highlight occurred in the 1800's.  Why not try directing your attention to today?

You hate BS'ers?  Do you mean to tell us you're on official business??  Is that why you've been saving your wee package of factoids?

Frankly, I rather think of you in terms of a passage out of Tombstone:

Tombstone wrote:Doc Holliday: A man like Ringo has got a great big hole, right in the middle of him. He can never kill enough, or steal enough, or inflict enough pain to ever fill it.

Wyatt Earp: What does he need?

Doc Holliday: Revenge.

Wyatt Earp: For what?

Doc Holliday: Bein' born.

You're the whole package within yourself, without need of outside provocation.  You've got to get over yourself, before what you say becomes relevant. Tune in. Go for it...right now it's all you...tryin' to fill that big hole. Rolling Eyes

Really interesting that your history stops in the mid-60s, wonder why that is?

Maybe it's Reagan's first presidential bid, where he spoke of "states' rights" seven miles from the infamous murder of civil rights workers?

Maybe it's the Southern Strategy?

Maybe it's this?

Maybe it's all those other former Southern Democrats who became prominent Republicans?

I understand Republicans are fixated on the past, or at least what they think the past was like, but could you try dealing with politics as they've been for the past 50 years instead?

You're a Liberal, so you took my brief walk through history as an attack.  If you weren't so wrapped up in your political ideology, you wouldn't be so thin-skinned about its oppressive and violent history.

The list of Democratic Party atrocities is not to put the Republican party above the Democratic one.  You're both idiots.  Let's just get that out there.
Sometimes it's necessary to point out the cold hard facts and rub your nose in it, in order to bring you Liberals back down to earth.  Don't ever tout your extremely flawed political party or ideology as altruistic, fair, or just.  It's anything but.

Want current and relevant news of corruption and misdeeds within your party?  Hillary Clinton.  There's a whole volume of conversation in that name alone.  Lol.
Bernie Sanders getting shafted by the DNC because the fix was in for Hillary.  Who inevitably lost the election.  If the DNC had let the people choose, Bernie would have been the Democratic Primary winner and would have undoubtedly beat Trump by a hefty margin.
Your party is corrupt.  Always has been, always will be.
Serve your family and friends.  Not a corrupt ideology or party.  Become independent.

Not an attack...just pointless.  Your mission is to score points, but only on targets that you set up.  Why on a thread about Russia meddling in American elections, do you go into a cherry-picked listing of facts on racism?  It's because you are trying to display yourself--impress and intimidate people with your knowledge--not engage in a dialogue.

So far, your two messages are (1) no one else but me knows anything, that they are all "cry babies", "losers", that liberals are homosexuals (shoot two with that one), that homosexuals are weak and crying, and that everyone but you is low-born; and (2) and you are the really, really impressive one, and hence powerful one, if only by coming over here to have a shit-fit.

It is obvious that you are in need of attention.  That is why so many here instinctively think you are a juvenile...your loud and abusive crying out for notice distinguishes you.  As you mature you learn that what gets you attention is achievement, not mere noise.  You are growing into awareness of that, though, else you would not have tried to impress me with your cherry-picked factoids on racial history (it's like...see daddy, I can do history too...aren’t I good!!)  You need a lot of sandpapering, but you are right: you've got to earn respect, not grab it.  So far, noise is your security blankee.

Your belief that noise is attention carries over into a belief that noise is power.  You deal so much on the low lever of quips and jingles that it's hard to find examples you would understand.  But the ratio of abuse (noise) to content in your posts shows that you have a deep-seated insecurity, for which you need to make compensation.  This is clear sign of authoritarianism.

Why would anyone be surprised to find a right-winger is an authoritarian?  Only authoritarians believe in one-way communication.  And only in one-way communication is noise more important than reason.  Your dedication to pointless noise and abuse, shows that you believe that only noise will subdue the hated "liberals" and allow you the upper hand.

You will either learn, or you will end up in a mental institution.  You are not doing much to advance your communication and people skills over here, so you are not progressing your talents in that way.  If you try to advance your skills in the authoritarian direction, you stand a 99% chance of being institutionalized...and a 1% chance of joining with other brown shirts and really getting something going. I trust you see my point.

My bet is you won't make anything of yourself.

Bipartisan anger grows over Russia's subversion of American self-determination Empty Re: Bipartisan anger grows over Russia's subversion of American self-determination

@OQ
You're the only person in this thread to mention homosexuals.  Not sure what your rant concerning homosexuals is about, but it sounds like you're trying to defend your sexuality.  I can assure you, nobody cares who you sleep with.  Moving along...

The rest of your post is the same dry bull dung.  You can't address the topics at hand (at least not knowledgeably) and it makes you feel inept, puny, and angry.  As a result, you go off on these mini-tirades, with me as your focal point. Just keep in mind, it's not me that makes you look dumb.  It's the nonsense you spew that makes you look dumb.  And uninformed.  And a wannabe.

Just silently sit in your corner and take notes.  You'll be better off for it.  Promise.

I wasn't limiting myself to this tread. You have made many references to gays and gays being cry babies, losers, low-born, etc. There is plenty more to go around.
