Kellyanne Conway says Trump is “going to put his own people” in the intelligence community

During an interview on Face the Nation, Donald Trump's senior advisor Kellyanne Conway insisted that the President-elect "absolutely respects the intelligence community," even though he refuses to accept their consensus view of Russian interference in the election. She then added chillingly: "He's made very clear he's going to put his own people in there as well" — suggesting Trump will merely replace the intelligence community with people who tell him what he wants to hear.



Following news of a secret CIA assessment concluding that Russia intervened to help Donald Trump win the election, Democrats have continued to push hard for answers and accountability.
Members of the GOP have been considerably more reticent to speak and step up, with very few exceptions, and their new President-elect is deflecting and actively denouncing the intelligence report as “ridiculous.”
While interviewing Trump senior advisor Kellyanne Conway, Face the Nation host John Dickerson pressed her on the apparent inconsistency of insisting Trump respects the intelligence community while simultaneously dismissing their findings out of hand. Conway’s answer was typically alarming.

DICKERSON: I’m just trying to get a sense of the new president-elect’s views about the intelligence community… The reason I ask is that he’s had a lot of intelligence briefings [sic], and then when he was asked about this question, which is coming from the intelligence community, he said that it was a “laughing point.” In other words, the notion that the Russians were involved in the election was laughable. And so I’m just wondering how he can both respect the intelligence community and then think something they’re telling him is laughable. That seems to be a disconnect.
CONWAY: It’s completely compatible. He absolutely respects the intelligence community. He’s made very clear he’s going to put his own people in there as well. What he has said is laughable and ridiculous is this entire notion, which people are just using as a foregone conclusion, that somehow this was meant to defeat Hillary Clinton and elevate him to the presidency.

Within this casual aside is a shocking admission: Trump’s plan is simply to replace the intelligence community with yes-men. That is fundamentally incompatible with the role the intelligence community is meant to play.
The CIA delivered a report finding Russians had indeed interfered “to defeat Hillary Clinton and elevate [Trump] to the presidency.” Conway sniffs that it is being treated “as a foregone conclusion,” as though intelligence assessments are just a matter of opinion. As though it is reasonable for the president-elect to ignore them — and call them “ridiculous” — if he does not like the conclusion.
Trump himself asserted that he does not need intelligence briefings, claiming it is because he is “like a smart person,” but Conway gives away the real reason he is avoiding them: They are providing information he does not want to hear. So, instead, Trump will install people who deliver him “intelligence” more to his liking.
Clearly, Trump does respect the current intelligence community. He respects them enough to know that he must replace them.
That is an intolerably dangerous position for a president to take.

Trump sees the world as energy applied to mass, not as truth or falsehood.  Truth is what you create, not what you find.  In Trump's world, reality is a bundle of pushes and pulls, in which the strongest dictate what is truth.

In a world of real estate investments, it’s difficult to go wrong under any theory.  Real estate involves permanent assets, and they don’t spoil or get surpassed by new technologies.  There’s not much surprise in real estate, it’s permanent, it always appreciates in value, and there’s always another deal around the corner.  It’s an uncreative world, involving buyers, sellers, banks and insurance companies, all of whom have functions, not creative thoughts.  In his world, Trump can afford to view the world as push/pull, because the underlying reality (real estate) is impossible to damage or destroy.

Intelligence is at the opposite end of the spectrum.  It is completely interpretation and theory.  It is ethereal and involves speculation, and delicate maneuvering.  As they found in the Battle of Midway, there is underlying truth to intelligence, but it is truth of the sort that is conceptual…who is doing what, and why?  And Bletchley Park was as much involved in creating conceptions (deception), as figuring them out.  It’s a world of intrigue, where much damage can be done by moving indelicately.

Unfortunately, Trump sees anything conceptual as malleable…you can bully your way into getting what you want.  That’s the meaning of The Art of The Deal.  He thinks in terms of hard assets (real estate), which are indestructible…and therefore no damage can be done to the underlying subject if you bully your way into getting what you want.  In Trump’s world he doesn’t understand destruction of the subject…there’s no apple-cart to upset in Manhattan real estate.  Trained in hard real estate, he sees the world as push/pull, or simple energy applied to mass.

So with his presumptions, how would he go about intelligence?  If it is conceptual, Trump sees it as a task, not of reality, but of persuasion.  He needs to get head-to-head with someone and bully or cajole that person.  That’s what he’s always done before, and the underlying assets were not such that they can disappear in a fit of anger or emotion.  Trump thinks like an institutionalized bully: he will beat the shit out of ISIS—like a delicatessen owner who won’t sell his little store--and charm and cajole a big-time investor like Putin…into The Deal.

Needless to say, he will become the proverbial bull in a china shop.
