Self harming young people, the downside of social media.
http://news.sky.com/story/social-media-to-blame-for-14-rise-in-self-harm-hospital-admissions-10688539
"Social media has contributed to a rise in incidents of self-harm among children, a charity has warned.
Data obtained under the Freedom of Information Act found 18,778 children aged 11 to 18 were admitted to hospital for self harm in 2015/16, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) found.
That figure represents a 14% rise on the 16,416 hospital admissions in 2013/14, the data from England and Wales shows.
Youngsters aged 13 to 17 were most likely to end up in hospital for self-harm, including injuries from cutting, overdosing on pills or burning themselves.
Figures from the Childline helpline run by the NSPCC showed it delivered 18,471 counselling sessions on self-harm last year - roughly 50 a day."

Judging by what we see ourselves on forums and the like ...is it any wonder?

People can be nasty when they're anonymous and children don't have the mental strength to deal with bullies like adults do.

Don't you think it's also this shiny, happy image people present on Facebook? Perhaps some young people compare their own lives and feel inadequate or something?

Yes, that's true. Being an adult doesn't suddenly make someone more able to deal with stuff. In fact, they probably get less support.

I don't do facebook or other social media sites, but I think that's a very good point.
Some people brag about what they have (or pretend to have) and if a person is feeling bad about themselves and they read how great everyone else's life is, that could make them feel a whole lot worse.

So true, I have known of several people who have left forums altogether because of the abuse they were getting off other adults.
So it's not surprising some kids are driven to self harming when they are the victims.

Everyone has the choice not to take part in social media and on line interaction.

I only take part because i'v nothing else to do, and it's amusing to read the way some get knickers in a twist and start insulting, shows they'v lost the argument really.

Of course they do, but they get sucked in. If a young person's friends are all on Facebook, that person is going to join too. They might hate it, but they feel like they're missing out if they don't join in.

Well we may think like that because we are old farts, but it's such a huge part of life now for younger ones, and why should they be forced to be left out of the main social activity, which is interacting with people online?
The fault lies with the bullies not their victims.

I have a few pages open all the time, I am dead good at techie multi tasking now.
New Years Eve.....I am with you, I have never liked the forced gaiety and the puckered lips that people you wouldn't give the time of day to normally think they can inflict on you just because it's midnight.....yuck.
The last few years me and OH stay in, roast chestnuts and open a bottle of Champagne near midnight. We then watch Jools Holland and go to bed....boring but nice.

I hate jools Holland so much that I want to actually kick him and stand on his foot.
I don't even make it to midnight. There's something about the end of the year that I don't like.
Not keen on goodbyes hahahaha

Well if you ever had to sit through Andy Stewart on new years eve....you would think Jools Holland was a Godsend.
A whole new world has opened up with all the newly discovered smilies....I may give 4E a run for her money now.

I ignore New Year - utterly hideous and pointless celebration.

Sure, we should all be able to do as like and in an ideal world be all nice to each other but the internet is open game for the thin skinned, and if it makes you ill, or affects you psychologically, then you need to have the will power to stop using it in that capacity. You wouldn't keep putting your hand in the fire if it burnt you, would you?
These days at least people are now getting convicted of bullying and trolling on line, but you simply can't police a group of youngsters telling each other they are fat or have big noses etc etc.

I agree. There's nothing more tedious than that Auld Lang Syn waving your crossed arms about either. I quite like the fireworks though.
