ith Vaz is back. Not in his role as chair of the House of Commons Home Affairs Committee, but back nonetheless, as a member of the Justice Select Committee.

The Leicester East Labour MP and former minister was forced to resign his previous position after an exposé by the Sunday Mirror, which videoed his intimate conversation with a couple of rent boys, including discussion of illegal drugs. Given that his committee was about to embark on an inquiry into the country’s prostitution laws, it’s difficult to see how he could possibly have continued to lead its deliberations.

Nevertheless, when he finally renounced the chairmanship, it was clear he was doing so reluctantly. Within a matter of a few weeks, barely enough time for the newsprint on the sleazy headlines to dry, he put himself forward for a vacant spot on the Justice Committee, whose remit has areas of overlap with that of the Home Affairs Committee...
