I have fixed up my mother's old battered laptop. It has taken me pretty much all day.

It wouldn't allow me to restore to factory settings?? I had to manually do most of it. I'm still going....

Which OS are you using? Because if it's really old, it might run better with a Linux distro, which are functional, fast and secure for the most part.

Okay Reilly, I need to ask one thing as I don't want to commit to this Underwhatsit thing until I know that it wont make everything go weird on this laptop. I know you said that it would be ok for what I need but does it change where everything is and what it looks like, the appearance etc?

Did that make sense? Fuck knows.
