Tearjerker Tunes
What is the saddest song you can think of? In terms of the lyrics, melody or instrumentals. Or all three?
Something that makes your eyes smart - or worse.
A haunting tune that brings bitter sweet memories.
Quite a few come to mind.

Ben Folds has a lot of sad and deep songs, personally I find 'picture window' to be amougst the saddest.
Written from the perspective of the parent of a child with a terminal illness.

Just naming the song title should be quite ok, eds. Or just posting the YT link, no need to embed.

Re: Tearjerker Tunes
The name sounded familiar, I had to google it, nicko.
The Leonard Cohen song I posted is especially sad cos he wrote it when the love of his life died. Before he wrote it, he said something like "I want to be with you (on the other side) and I will be, very soon. In fact I am right behind you, so close that if you reach out you will be able to touch my hand."
I won't even bother to include the songs David Bowie sang in his last few weeks when he was trying to make sense of his impending death. Still too raw to even to go there.

Next one. Oh that voice!!

I love that song so much. It has a very unique sound.
The intro sounds like "baa baa black sheep have you any wool" though.

Because it is very distinctive. Distinctive songs only come about every once in a while.

Few people could do melancholy like Elton John. Give him his due.
Norma Jean, Sacrifice, Yellow Brick Road, Daniel .... he even wrote a track entitled 'Sad Songs'!!!
Won't bother posting any cos it's hard to decide.
Moving on ...
Seasons in the sun
If you go away.
Days of our lives

Hi Bru x How are ya?
In military terms this is of course the saddest tune ever. The daddy of them all.
No lyrics, the bugle says it all.

I'm fine Jules and I hope you are as well and thank you for asking.
Yes, the Last Post is just as you say. I remember when when were kids way back and the Last Post and the Lone Piper were played at the end of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. It used to be screened live on the BBC on the last night and the highlight that we always lookked forward to were these two contributions. It was a great honour for the bandsman that was selected to play the Last Post and the Piper to play on the battlements of Edinburgh Castle.
I was only at the Tattoo on one occasion and it was fantastic watching all the events from the military from all over the world.
Back then it was all in black and white of couse.
