Another tragic death caused by a dangerous dog.
A beautiful 3 year old boy savaged to death by an out of control dangerous dog.
A few days ago a man was horrifically torn to shreds in the street by a dog which had recently been returned to it's owner as "safe"
Tha dangerous dog act came in 25 years ago...in the last decade reported dog attacks have risen by 78%...something is wrong, what's the solution?
"Two police officers were seen guarding the front of the house, which was cordoned off with blue and white tape.
A small blood-spattered toy car could be seen in the shed of the home and forensic officers were examining it this afternoon.
Neighbours described seeing a white dog being dragged from the property with "its face ... covered in blood".

This makes my blood boil. It's nearly always the same class of person, living in social housing, probably on benefits, with small kids and big fuck off dog. Why would you even want that kind of dog round your kids? Specially toddlers.

Neighbour Craig Bacon told Sky News that he thought the dog at the property was a "small white one".
An American bulldog, it's actually known for being very good with children.
The American Bulldog is loyal, reliable, brave and determined. Not a hostile dog. Alert and self-confident, this breed genuinely loves children. It is known for its acts of heroism toward its master. It has strong protective instincts, and needs a firm, confident, consistent pack leader. Well-socialize and obedience train them at an early age, to prevent them from becoming reserved with strangers. Without that strong-minded pack leader who can tell the dog what is expected of it, it may be aggressive with other dogs. They need to be around people and know their place in their pack to be truly happy. This breed tends to drool and slobber. Without enough daily mental and physical exercise they will become high strung and may become hard to handle.

There has been many instances in middle class areas because people don't know how to train a dog.

Re: Another tragic death caused by a dangerous dog.
My opinion is that in the majority of cases it's the owners not the dog who is at fault.
Obviously because they have allowed the dog freedom to attack in the first place, but the way the dog is treated prior to any attack is probably the main reason it's dangerous.
The photograph of that little boy playing happily, then reading that his toy car was 'blood spattered' makes me so sad.
His family will never recover

Re: Another tragic death caused by a dangerous dog.
It worries me when I see people and their dog is in charge of them instead of the other way round. The nastiest dog I ever encountered, who ripped out the stomach (literally) of my lovely placid luncher (I did manage to save him) was a Jack Russell.

Oh that's horrible Sassy. Seeing your dog attacked is like seeing one of your family attacked....hard to cope with even if they do survive.
It just shows that any breed of dog can be dangerous to both humans and other animals.
We had neighbours that owned a mad collie dog. It literally terrorised people, and bit more than once..

Re: Another tragic death caused by a dangerous dog.
He did it a 2nd time, ripped his leg, I reported him. Didn't want to the first time because the owner promised it would never be off a lead again and I could see he loved it, but 6months later I came round a corner with my lurcher and he was off the lead again and attacked again. It took me 2 years to train my dog to accept other dogs again, he used to shake and snarl if he saw one. I had to stand over him, push his head of his chest so he couldn't snarl and put my other hand in front of him and say very firmly NO and show him I was in charge and I would protect him. Very slowly it worked. He ended up his soppy self again, playing with baby bunnies and next door's cat his best mate lol. He never had a problem with people, kids could sit on him and he didn't mind, it was just other dogs.
Any dog, badly trained, bored, maybe not treated very well, can be unpredictable.

Certain types of people think these dogs are status symbols, weapons and encourage them to attack or don't control them, or abuse them and torment them. There are no 'bad' dogs. However, any dog should be supervised around small children.

Did you see that poor puppy in the news that some idiot 17 year old gave drugs too? I couldn't watch the video. Poor thing convulsed itself almost to death and it had to be put down.

AND, let's not forget, also :
American Bulldogs;
Bull Terriers;
American 'Pit Bull' terriers..
== Three different breeds..
The Bulldogs and the (Staffordshire) Bull Terriers are breeds that are normally known to be reasonably placid and well behaved, good 'family dogs' -- when well socialised, trained and conditioned.
The 'American Pit Bull' terrier though, is another matter all together -- a dog deliberately "out bred" from the regular ("Staffy") bull terriers solely for the purpose of fighting (hence the "Pit" in the breeds name..) - by crossing them with more savage dogs, and deliberately selecting for fighting abilty and bad temperment.
A lot of times, people wanting to own these 'Pit Bulls' often seem to be using the dog's identity and reputation to make up for deficiencies in their own character, physical stature or mental state..
IT IS often seen where people are confusing these breeds, either blaming the wrong breed, or on hearing about an incident, mistaking which breed is involved...
Where Pit Bulls are listed on dangerous breeds lists by authorities (as they are in some Australian states..), it is not unusual to see some owners falsely passing their pets off as 'Staffies' rather than what they actually are..
In the case of Bulldogs though (and Pugs and Boxers), anyone confusing them with Bull Terriers really doesn't know their stuff; (and it's not as unusual as it would seem, either - I once met someone who had a German Shepherd x Red Heeler (cattle dog), who tried to claim that it was a "pure bred" Shepherd -- when it most obviously wasn't..).

It is. When I was a kid we had a gorgeous placid little mongrel dog called Judy. A collie dog that lived further up the street was always sat unleashed outside their house. We had to carry Judy till we got out of the street because the dog would always attack her if she got the chance....she hurt her a couple of times too.
I don't think you ever forget things like this.

Re: Another tragic death caused by a dangerous dog.
People often 'BLAME THE BREED' instead of the humans that do such irresponsible - heinous things to those type of dogs.
But having worked in rescue for nearly 30+ years it's shocking that well intentioned people will 'Fabricate' a dogs own history thinking that by lying about that specific dogs aggressive past they're doing that dog a favor and saving it's life! Only to pay it forward to some unsuspecting family that 'Assumes' that keeping a watchful eye and being a good steward of responsible dog ownership will prevent any problems just because of that BREED.
I've many a horror stories about such incidents where a rescued Staffordshire Pit-bull/Rottweiler/Doberman has killed the families existing lovely family pet because they got into a playful moment that went out of control!
People can be so naïve about their 'DOG TRAINING' skills and how to introduce a NEWBIE into the pack when they aren't home to observe how the 'PACK' is behaving when they aren't around!
And the children get shredded - the slower moving elderly suffer and innocent pets that live near by suffer horrendous attacks or die from those wounds and complications.

Re: Another tragic death caused by a dangerous dog.
There have ben several cases where dogs have been returned to the owners, or sold on to different owners, when the dog is obviously unsuitable to be around children or other animals.
http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/smiling-faces-children-mauled-death-8664766
"In the same year, four-year-old Lexi Branson was killed by a pet dog during an attack at a flat in Mountsorrel, Leicestershire.
Her mother Jodi Hudson made desperate attempts to halt the Aylestone Bulldog, which had been a stray until a couple of months earlier when they bought him for £50 from a local kennels
An inquest into her death heard how staff knew the dog was not suitable to be housed with small children - yet still agreed to sell it.
They also failed to carry out a home visit despite knowing Jodi lived with Lexi in a two-bedroom flat with no secure back garden."

EXACTLY - We were doing a landscape project for a dear friend; she'd worked with our animal rescue group - she was an animal control office for the next large municipal city {85,000 population} and yet this lovely/warm hearted women brought home 2 pit-bull full brother dogs into her home and left them in her back yard, thinking that they'd acclimate with her 2 older/feeble darling mix breed mutts.
When the horrendous dog fight started my landscape crew tried to intervene but the tall privacy fence and the horrible sounds made those college kids afraid to enter in there to stop whatever the hell was going on!
They called me - they called 911 and many of us arrived at the same time; the horror of what was left of her two older dogs was nothing I ever wanted to see - the trauma that the guilt for what she'd done to her older aged family members was something she's suffered to this day {23yrs later}!
We had those two Pit-Bulls taken right to our Vet Center and euthanized right then & there ...what was left of her lovely dogs were bagged up and my crew buried the remains for her and we hosed down all of the fence and grass areas as best we could. I've never seen such big college dudes work through so much gore and emotional stress in my life; but they sucked it up and did a huge favor for that friend & customer!
And that horror, all because 'SHE' thought she could see & feel what a dog THOUGHT and she 'THOUGHT & FELT' that those 2 pit-bulls were just being judged unfairly by society for their breed name!
Her delusional - emotional hysteria about rational animal behavior killed her two lovely old defenseless dogs!

That's so sad.....maybe 23 years ago people were not as aware.
There is now no no excuse to mix dangerous strays, where no one knows of their past history, with faithful family pets today.....yet not only do people still do that, they allow them to be adopted by families with young children....madness.

For the first 5 years of my life I was watched over by an English bull terrier called Trixie..
She was allowed to guard my cot at night from me being born....and she was the most gentle, faithful, loyal family dog.
To outsiders she would have attacked without hesitation....she was quite vicious.
Would that be allowed to happen today....it would be considered to be incredibly stupid to anyone with an ounce of sense.

Oh, she was AWARE; but this was a woman that THOUGHT she had become the 'Dog Whisperer' of her profession {long before Cesar Millan} - Animal Control Officer ...in charge of a 5 employee staff, plus a full time clerk and volunteer group of 4, she'd been working in this profession for over 13 years and she had her own long list of rescue story's to recount!
It's a fine line that humans walk that often gets crossed between 'rescuing & hoarding' and the number of animal rescue places I've had to go on ...that once were 'Rescue Shelters', {just in my area} is appalling and WTF were they thinking to all such horrid conditions to get so out of hand!

But those Staffordshire {pit-bull} were the Nanny Dogs - breed and used to protect those wee-little ones from horrid varmints and other creepy things that were able to gain access to babies & toddlers just because of their size and their limited ability to escape!
That's what the Staffordshire was used for - long before 'Bull-Baiting/dog fighting' became the more lucrative sport for them.
That's how 'MAN' has changed their disposition

I believe some people believe they have an empathy with all animals....but at the end of the day animal instinct is wild not human...they dont owe us anything, especially if they have been bred or treated badly.

And as we are only able to apply our HUMAN thought process to what we 'ASSUME' any animal may do {according to observations and conditioned behavior to certain stimuli or responses} ...there's no actual way to KNOW what any one animal species is THINKING but many people have come very close to predicting certain pack behavior and body language according to breed type.

It's interesting isn't it?
I saw a documentary a while ago about a man who believed he had an affinity with wild bears....he lived in their domain, studied them, and for years he seemed to have some sort of 'relationship' with these wild animals....course, they killed him in the end.

She was just an ordinary very old fashioned looking woman wasn't she...her catchphrase "Walkies" said in a shrill no nonsense voice became her trademark.
I don't know why but she always reminded me of what Mary Whitehouse would have looked like if Mary had lived on a farm.

Re: Another tragic death caused by a dangerous dog.
I went right off Barbara Woodhouse when I saw her use a choke chain on a tiny yorkshire terrier, jerking it right off the ground and hanging it up in the air for what seemed like ages.
Now, something nice about dogs, one in particular:
Protective dog succumbs to injuries after shielding 8-month-old in house fire
Polo the dog saves 8-month-old infant
olo, a family’s dog, saved an 8-month-old baby by shielding her body as a fire ravaged her home.
Baltimore mom Erika Poremski stepped outside for just a few minutes to retrieve something from her car while her baby slept upstairs in their home. A fire started and spread so quickly that it stopped Poremski from being able to save her child. She tried multiple times to get into the home and run up to the child, sustaining multiple burns on her face and hands, but was unable to save her.
“I just heard her crying and I couldn’t get to her,” Poremski told WBAL-TV.
Polo, however, sprung into action, using his own body to protect the baby from the fire.
“He stayed with her the whole time in the bedroom and wouldn’t even come downstairs to get out the door,” said Poremski.
Firefighters arrived and were able to get to the baby and paramedics were able to revive the infant. She sustained burns on the side of her face and her arm, but firefighters say she would not have survived if it Polo hadn’t protected her.

Re: Another tragic death caused by a dangerous dog.
My dog is just digging and eating sand at the moment.
My garden is full of it due to the work being done blah blah boring.....anyway, I sat in this sand garden all afternoon playing with my dog (I didn't eat it though). I was using my hand and pretending there was something under there and she was going mad digging at it and barking.
It gave me no end of amusement.

I was just thinking about you and your huge 'BIG DIG' and wondering how that project was going?
But you think that's wise ...teaching 'Cookie' it's acceptable to DIG? That amusement might come back to bite ya in the backside.

Yes I was thinking that but she'd already been digging and I've already come to the conclusion I can't actually stop her; besides, she's doesn't dig grass just earth and sand apparently?
I'm rather concerned about what I'm going to do to amuse myself once the top soil is put on later today or tomorrow.....

I AGREE re: Barbara Woodhouse, as well, sassy...
I've never l8ked her..
To me, she's always come across as a second-rate dog walker, elevated way above her actual level of competence, skill and knowledge through having a TV network, and later on a book publisher, cashing in on her quirky appeal to the lowest common denominnator.

Oh, Eddie you'd you better find a squeaky - something to distract her from that digging pleasure ...none of your shrubbery will have a safe dirt area around their root system if she's ever left out in the back yard on her own unsupervised behavioreddie wrote:Yes I was thinking that but she'd already been digging and I've already come to the conclusion I can't actually stop her; besides, she's doesn't dig grass just earth and sand apparently?

Will you be able to take project photos to show off all of your 'BIG DIG'?

What a sad story. Some animals are just special. Did the dog act on instinct? I would think most animals would flee from fire, or did this dog really set out to protect this child?

This is it today. I've been out all day and they've left their machinery for Cookie to bark at - because apparently, it's something worth barking at....

Re: Another tragic death caused by a dangerous dog.
I took your photo and flipped it over - called it 'Eddies Big Dig' LOL
WOW, you'd be all set to have a 'BEACH PARTY' theme shindig back
there; just hang up some funky lights and tikka smudge pots and Luau
the night away! Rock-N-Roll to the Beach Boys Surf City.
But that little trak loader - sure brings back lots of fond memories from lots
of landscape jobs for hubby & I and our crew. My OH was much better at
running that then I ever managed it ...I was OK in the wide open spaces, he
handled those close courters/tight areas like what you've got.
I'd have been a wrecking crew on that fence!

That is the oddest thing ...that everything comes in off of you phone as an 'upside down image'
You'd best avoid trying to move that machinery, little woman ...you might make an exit through that lovely privacy fence that you'd need to replace ASAP.
But they are fun to work with - out there in some open lot where you could dig a hole and move some DIRT!
