Eurocrat warns the EU is ‘CLOSE TO DEATH’ amid fears Canada trade deal could COLLAPSE
THE European Union is on the brink of total collapse if its trade deal with Canada falls through, an EU bureaucrat has warned.
The bloc’s director general for trade Jean-Luc Demarty said EU business and industry will be “close to death” if both parties cannot agree the deal.
The EU is facing public opposition towards Brussels' trading policy.
In a devastating blow for Brussels, the EU needs all of its 38 national and regional parliaments to agree the deal for it to be signed by Canada, which could result in delays and possible vetoes to the agreement.
The standoff has left the EU scrambling to save the deal if it is to preserve itself as a global trading force.
Demarty delivered his chilling warning at the bloc’s trade policy committee, claiming Brussels would have a “big credibility problem” if it failed to secure the agreement.
Two other diplomats in the meeting claimed Demarty looked “helpless” as he delivered the bleak forecast for the 28-member bloc.
