Boy 8 dies of Scurvy
How the fuckity fuck can this happen?
An eight-year-old boy who died of scurvy was 'invisible' to the authorities after his parents refused to allow officials to see him from the age of 13 months.
Dylan Seabridge died aged eight at his family's isolated farmhouse in Pembrokeshire, Wales, and had no direct contact with doctors, nurses or teachers for seven years.
His parents Glynn, 47, and Julie, 46, who home-schooled him, initially believed he was suffering from growing pains but the true cause was revealed after he collapsed in December 2011 and later died in hospital.

Look at the cut of these two? What on earth they were feeding him on is beyond comprehension that he died from lack of Vitamin C.

I thought that was an old story, and it is. I seem to remember it becasue I thought the same thing.
They obviously knew he was dying. Scurvy isn't something you get all of a sudden.

It's pretty hard in this day and age to die of scurvy. They couldn't have fed him any fruit or veg. I think this is a dreadful story, and those two should be jailed.

Re: Boy 8 dies of Scurvy
"The report accepts parents have the right to educate their child at home rather than at school - and that home education was not in itself a risk factor for abuse or neglect - but recommended creating a register of home-schooled children to keep tabs on them."
I didn't know this. Even after working in education and being a school governor for five years I didn't know this! (Why didn't I know?)
That's crazy! How can there be no register of children who are schooled at home?

Re: Boy 8 dies of Scurvy
So a parent can opt to home educate without any tests or qualifications that prove they are equipped to do so?
And no checks are ever made on the child??
So in effect that child could be dead or abused for years and no one would know.
It sounds utterly mad.

Re: Boy 8 dies of Scurvy
Right now 50,000 children are being home educated in the UK and that figure is rising by 80 per cent every year. They can't all be knitting their own yoghurt, can they?
The staggering increase means that a diverse section of parents are turning their back on traditional schooling and going their own way.
There are two main types of home educators - radical unschoolers, who follow the child's lead, and regular home schoolers, who follow a curriculum at home.
Here we take a closer look at the controversial education method that is taking the UK by storm.
It might sound impossible - let's face it, most of us struggle to make it to school on time, let alone turn our home into the school - but with such high numbers joining up, it has clearly become a viable option for many parents and children, unhappy with the traditional schooling system.
Home education (HE) is completely legal, largely unregulated and your child can still sit exams, for a fee.
So, where do you begin to even find out about educating your child at home? We have pulled together a Netmums guide to home schooling to help you make an informed choice about what is best for your child.

Re: Boy 8 dies of Scurvy
Were the parents actually neglecting the child or starving the child?
Or did he have some sort of other medical problem where vitamin c just wasn't being absorbed/used properly by his body...?
I don't think the parents were ever prosecuted for any wrongdoing...

The point is Tommy, that the child obviously needed medical care and the parents neglected to get him any.

Re: Boy 8 dies of Scurvy
Not true eddie... the child collapsed and was then taken to hospital where he later died of a heart attack...
A reason of vitamin c deficiency was given as cause... but...
"...Dylan’s family rejected the findings..."
And...
"...Professor Joris Dlanghe, a specialist from Belgium, also questioned whether Dylan had scurvy, saying other deficiencies such as folic acid would also have been present but were not..."
