Hundreds Evacuate as Thousands of Acres Burn Across Western States
by Brian McBride - AVIANNE TAN  Jun 17, 2016, 12:03 PM ET
Hundreds of firefighters have been scrambling to contain several wildfires in three western states after recent spells of hot, dry weather.
Blazes in California, New Mexico and Arizona have threatened several communities with thousands of residents, and hundreds of homes have been evacuated.
Here's what we know about the fires in each of the states:

A fast-moving brush fire that broke out in Santa Barbara County had grown to 1,700 acres as of midnight on Friday.

The blaze, dubbed the Sherpa fire, quickly spread due to strong winds in the area, threatening structures and prompting hundreds to evacuate, fire officials said. An estimated 140 homes and ranches were potentially at risk.
About 800 firefighters, who've had to deal with a steep and rugged terrain, are still trying to contain the fire as of Thursday evening.
No injuries have been reported.

Eighteen structures have been damaged or destroyed in the Manzano Mountains of central New Mexico, where firefighters have struggled to make progress against a blaze that burned 16,000 acres.

An estimated 100 to 200 homes in the mountains, along with communities from several counties, were placed under a mandatory evacuation order as flames raced northeast.
The wildfire, called the Dog Head Fire, produced a thick haze that covered the state's largest city of Albuquerque, according to photos on social media.
The New Mexico National Guard has been activated to help fight the blaze, which still had not been contained Thursday evening, Gov. Susana Martinez announced.
No injuries have been reported.
Arizona

Over 5,500 acres burned in east-central Arizona as of Thursday evening, and a small community in the Cedar Creek area was evacuated.
Thousands of other residents were told to prepare for departure after the wildfire ravaged more than 12 square miles and closed down US Highway 60 for 20 miles.
Fire crews have made good progress as they held down containment lines Thursday, according to officials.
The blaze, known as the Cedar Fire, broke out Wednesday 12 miles south of Show Low. The Show Low community has not been given a mandate to evacuate, according to the Navajo County Sheriff's office.
No injuries have been reported.

I just can't imagine ...as horrible as our pastures driven high wind brush fires were back in early April & May --- we didn't have the number of tall pines and old oak trees {some of them 100 years old or older} to fuel these huge fires!
So much mountainous area to cover and such hard work for those fire fighters!

It's a chemical that makes people docile and suppresses independent thought, ordered to be deployed by Obama so that people will be more likely to vote for Hillary. They call it "fire suppressant."

Wild Fires Burning In: Californina - New Mexico - Arizona for days now. 371740092 now that's an answer I'll have to stash back for another 'rainy day'!

The same 'RED SHIT' that was all the other images I've placed in any of the fire images - ya, even the ones for the Canadian McCurry fire photo's but WTF ...the memory is such a fleeting thing when one doesn't have a functioning brain to work with. Those humans in McCurry were scrambling trying to avoid the blowing burning embers - the horrible smoke and that 'fire retardant' --- it's very cloying on the lungs and rather hazardous for breathing!

Wild Fires Burning In: Californina - New Mexico - Arizona for days now. Empty Now The Search For Human Remains Begin ...

California firefighters begin grim search for more wildfire victims
Trevor Hughes, USA TODAY 3:24 a.m. EDT June 26, 2016
LAKE ISABELLA, Calif. — As crews searched Saturday for more wildfire victims, officials said scorching heat predicted for the next week will likely help fuel the deadly Erskine Fire and complicate efforts to control the blaze.
Two people are confirmed dead in the 35,000-acre wildfire that began Thursday night, and officials say they fear they may find more victims in the tangled mess left behind by the inferno. The two people who died were apparently overcome by smoke as they fled their home. The fire called an “ugly monster” by one firefighter consumed about 150 homes across the area, many of them quick-to-burn mobile homes and trailers reduced to little more than melted aluminum.
Firefighters found what appears to be a set of human remains while going through neighborhoods, but because they were so badly burned forensic investigators will have to determine whether they belonged to a person or animal, Kern County Sheriff’s spokesman Ray Pruitt said.
In a briefing Saturday morning, authorities reassured evacuees that they’re closely patrolling neighborhoods to prevent looters and said they hoped by Saturday afternoon to have a better handle on exactly what homes were destroyed, a painstaking process requiring in-person visits by assessment teams working in the still-dangerous environment.
Hundreds of people have been evacuated from the area. Authorities won’t let them return until they’ve got a better handle on the blaze. More wind and scorching temperatures predicted for the next week will make that harder, although the fire on Friday largely burned its way east away from homes.
At least 1,500 structures remain threatened, and the fire on Friday at one point jumped the main road from the town of Lake Isabella east toward the South Lake area, forcing authorities to divert drivers.
Some ranchers in the area are getting increasingly frustrated they can’t return to their property to feed and water their valuable cattle and voiced their frustration to authorities.

“The problem is this fire keeps shifting,” Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said Friday night in response to those concerns. “We are throwing all the resources we have at this.”
Firefighters are still trying to control hot spots of fire within populated areas so cadaver dogs can begin their grim work. Calif. Gov. Jerry Brown on Friday afternoon declared a state of emergency for the county, and he is seeking a federal disaster declaration. Those declarations will help both fight the fire and assist residents in recovering from the damage. The fire is considered 0% contained, but authorities said that will likely rise significantly by Saturday evening.
At 35,000 acres, the fire is twice the size of Manhattan. Many large wildfires are burning across the Southwest. The Erskine Fire is considered one of the most damaging because it has killed two people and destroyed at least 80 homes, along with miles of electrical and telephone lines.

Between the years of drought + pine bark beetles getting a well established foot hold into these saturated confer forested regions + El Niño/ Santa Ana wind currents + either a man made spark or lightening = the wild fires take off ...driven along by winds and gusts up to 60mph; not much is able to out run the heat and the choking smoke!

So much loss and now so many lives impacted because they couldn't get out in time!
