Climate change breakthrough as Iceland turns carbon dioxide into stone
'Carbon capture can contribute significantly to reducing carbon dioxide emissions'
A radical breakthrough in tackling climate change has been made after scientists found a rapid way to turn heat-trapping carbon-dioxide into rock.
The exclusive two year project, called CarbFix, pumped a carbon dioxide and water mix 540m underground into basalt rock at the Hellisheidi geothermal power plant in Iceland.
The acidic mixture dissolved the rocks' calcium magnesium and formed limestone, permanently and naturally trapping the gas, according to Juerg Matter of the University of Southampton and the lead author of a study detailing the experiment.

What a bloody brilliant idea!

LIMESTONE isn't "permanent"...
IT can be dissolved by acid, eroded by water, easily crushed...
Limestone is used in the production of cement, garden lime, slaked lime..
Storeage of gases that way may be long term, even very long, long term -- but it certainly can't be considered in any way "permanent".
AND, as the lead scientist himself admits, it is a quite expensive means of dealing with excess CO2 gases -- and we all know how those big power and mining companies just 'love' spending money, if they think they can avoid it, don't we !
P.S. The chemical name for carbon dioxide dissolved in water is carbonic acid, (nowhere near as strong as carbolic acid..).
That's why it gradually dissolves the calcium and magnesium out of the basalt rocks it's pumped into..

Now, if they could find a way to cap the Methane that is continually rising from the Sea floor it would be a big help in combating so called Global Warming!

THAT'S NOT the largest source of methane though, is it...
Don't forget rotting vegetation..
And farts..
Existing methane, ethane, CO2 and CO production in natural processes is a fact of life;
And has been for millions of years..
AND global warming, and cooling, are also part and parcel of natural cycles..
AS IS "the greenhouse effect"...
ALL OF WHICH is covered in year 7 general science at high school.
NOT ANYONE ELE'S fault if you, Tommy and,co. all decide to forget your schooling wgen you walk out those gates, nicko !
NONE of the Climate Change rhetoric is "sp called", nicko..
It simply is...
All of the naturally produced "greenhouse gases" are already included and allowed for, in the ever-improving and ever-growing computer modellings used in Climate Change study and research..
THE BIGGEST problem, and worry, is the increasing rate of climate change, and the more extreme and intensive results of that global warming, and cooling, since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, and especially since the end of the 19th century.
You and Tommy may decide that you know better than scientists working in the field, and th9se people at the 'battlefronts' experiencing the actual real world fallouts, nicko -- but all that you, Tommy and your fellow denialists wre really doing, is acting as the unpaid sockpuppets for the oil, mining and power corporations !
EVEN IF the results of man'-assisted Climate Change don't end up being as severe as predicted, at least Humanity will have gone someway towards cleaning up the messes they have already made across this planet..
HOWEVER, IF it does turn out to be as bad as predicted, or even more severe in some cases, than we will be much worse off if nobody does anything because they listened to the polluters and their lapdog supplicants !!!

We never covered Global Warming when I was at School,
[60yrs ago],----and when did I say I knew better than all the scientists?
I was just stating a fact, I never said it was the main cause did I?

WHAT YOU did do, nicko, was to add the phrase "so called" into your above statement...
THOSE two little words change the whole emphasis of your sentence.

Also worth noting that addressing global warming will actually help curb methane releases, not only from the oceans but also the tundra. As the tundra and ocean floors warm, the gas escapes more easily.
