Important that all the home nations and Republic of Ireland get off to a good start. Scotland ain't there though boo Hoo
I think England may do well this time and I don't read too much into the recent three warm-up matches.
I wish them all well.

Great gane by Wales. I thought they blew it after letting Slovakia equalize and were on the back foot for 20 minutes, but all credit to Wales. They dominated the first and came back after heavy pressure from Slovakia.
Great start for one of the British teams.

England playing extremely well... and I've been saying for years that Rooney should be played as a central offensive midfielder with another 2 or 3 strikers up front... at last this is what hodgson has done with the squad!
And here's a great interview with hodgson... and his new football song...

Great game, shame England let their guard down in extra time.
They dominated the first half, at the beginning of the second the Russians came back into the game and then England started to dominate and scored a cracking goal.
Just a shame, they got complacent in the last minute or so.
Still, they played well and look promising

Agreed Cass, they got complacent, and you are right they need to keep playing to the final whistle.
I was though encouraged at how they did perform well for most of the game.
This year is that much easier to progress as well as the as even some who finished 3rd will progress.

lol its only the first game Cass and we won the world cup after drawing the first game, but I see your point as its always that great feeling that comes craching down very rapidily, when they throw games away

English football in a nutshell:
Work hard only once the other nearly score a goal Score a goal
Get complacent and allow the other team to score by crap defence
Run around and panic throughout the rest of the game
Same story it always is.
And! I have no earthy idea WHY anyone thinks Rooney ever plays well for England: HE DOESNT
He is a big lump of a nothing player.

I watched the England match in the pub, but I got a bit distracted in the second half so I missed the goals. The next one is on Thursday - we shouldn't have any problem beating the Welsh.

Yay! What a result eh? I watched the match in the pub and the air was blue during the first half. Fantastic goal from Wales though. That last minute goal from England was fabulous, and gave us three points!

I quite enjoyed that match. Finishing second is actually not that bad because they will still miss one of the big teams. They will play the winner of the Hungary group which includes Portugal but the ain't doing too well at the moment.
Anyway, I'm off up the clun for a couple of pints before it shuts.
Catch you later.

Well done Northern Ireland who even though they lost tonight to Germany they still join Wales and England in the last 16. Great achievement and hopefully the Republic of Ireland can add to that tomorrow.
Well done to all of them.

Well done Republic of Ireland in defeating Italy 1-0 to make it through to the last 16. They pumelled the Italian team the whole match and thoroughly deserved their win.
The draw now is...
England v Iceland
Wales v Northern Ireland
Republic of Ireland v France
No football tomorrow or Friday and it all starts again on Saturday.
Time for a break as I'm knackered.

Good win for Italy today and they thouroghly deserved their win.
What can you say about England? They just couldn't get past Iceland who are a counter attacking team and they just basically failed in a match they were expected to win.
So home hopes now lie with Wales.

Thats the way Iceland play Raggs and if you look at their qualifying campagn they had some really imppresive results including beating Holland in Holland and knoacking them out.
Anyway Roy Hodgson has resigned. So who's next to take the job that has ended so badly for so many good managers in the past?

Goodness knows. It seems to me that the problem with England persists whoever the manager is, and whoever the players are. They hesitate for too long when they do actually manage to get near the goal, they aim too high when they try to score, and they seem to have an urge to pass the ball to the nearest opponent.

It's down to Wales now against Belgium and if they can get past them then it's Portugal they would meet and they haven't even won a game inside the 90 minutes. Three draws in the group stages and an extra winner in their last game. Wales have a decent chance and I hope they take it.

Wales 3-1 Belgium
What a fantastic result that was for the Welsh team against the world ranked number 2 side Belgium. They were outstanding and played to their strengths. Best football match I have watched in a while. Man of the Match Aaron Ramsay.
Next up Portugal and who's to say that the can't win that to get into the final.
Well done.

Wales tomorrow v Portugal and let's hope the Welsh lads can put in another great performance and get right into the final.
Iceland finally fell to France but even then they put in a spirited and brave performance and they can be proud of what they achieved.
Somehow they managed to beat England but they were right up for that game probably to get us back for what we tried to do them in the two Cod Wars.
Game on for Wales.

Portugal turned out to be real party poopers beating the French. They won it fair and square but did nothing for football with their tactics.
That's over now and so is Wimbers won by Andy Murray.
The Open Championship today was one of the best ever finishes with Stenson and Mickleson shooting it out with Stenson taking the old claret jug with some amazing golf. His 50' put at the 14th was ridiculous and that really ended Mickleson's challenge.
Chirpy Andrew 'Beef' Johnston kept the home flag flying for a while and he put in an amazing tournament as well and even in 8th place he'll walk away with around 220,000 dollars in prize money.
Next up it's Rio
