The Oklahoma GOP must be losing their minds right about now, now that the Satanic Temple has unveiled the design of the proposed statue they want built on the grounds of the Okla. state capitol.
The Satanic Temple has unveiled the design for their statue in front of the Okla. State Capitol.
“The monument has been designed to reflect the views of Satanists in Oklahoma City and beyond,” Temple spokesman Lucien Greaves told Raw Story. “The statue will serve as a beacon calling for compassion and empathy among all living creatures. The statue will also have a functional purpose as a chair where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation.”
The statue depicts Baphomet, a goat figure linked to the Sabbath. The goat-headed god is seated on a throne with a pentagram above His head. Children appear standing and smiling on either side of the throne. The seven-foot tall statue will also feature quotes by the poets William Blake and Lord Byron.
Baphomet has been worshiped for centuries and is in the form of a Sabbatic Goat.
Baphomet is an idol that has been worshiped since the 14th century. Some even claim the Knights Templar worshiped Him, as did the pagans in later years. Now, the symbol is most often associated with Satanists. The Sabbatic Goat combines opposite elements, including male and female and good and evil to convey the “sum total of the universe.” The statue design unveiled by the Satanic Temple has even more meaning according to Greaves.
“Our monument celebrates an unwavering respect for the Constitutional values of religious freedom and free expression,” Greaves stated. “Satanism is a fundamental component at the genesis of American liberty. Medieval witch-hunts taught us to adopt presumption of innocence, secular law, and a more substantive burden of proof… Acknowledging wrongful persecutions has helped shape the legal system that preserves the sovereignty of our skeptics, heretics, and the misunderstood. It has shaped a proud culture of tolerance and free inquiry. This is to be a historical marker commemorating the scapegoats, the marginalized, the demonized minority, and the unjustly outcast.”

There's no way to begin to satisfactorily answer your question, Catman, but I'd suggest starting with this article:

There are books on the subject...from the Skull and Bones Society at Yale University, to the Free Masons.
