Graham Norton outs him self as anti-Australian
GRAHAM Norton has slammed Australia’s involvement in the Eurovision Song Contest, as organisers announced Justin Timberlake would perform during the final.
Speaking on the red carpet at a UK TV industry award night, the popular light entertainment talk show host said he did not understand Australia’s involvement in the competition.
“Get rid of Australia,” The Sun quoted him as saying. “I know some countries aren’t technically in Europe but, come on — Australia is on the other side of world.”
“Last year they said it was a one-off as it was a celebratory anniversary and you think, ‘OK’, but they are back again.
“What’s that about? People go, ‘Oh you are so anti-Australia’. I’ve got nothing against Australia. I just think it is kind of stupid.”
Although the contest has traditionally been a European event, it has accepted entries from as far afield as Israel and Morocco in the past.
Norton’s rant came as Eurovision organisers announced that Justin Timberlake would be performing at the final this weekend — another sign of the “internationalisation” of the competition.
Organisers say Timberlake will take the stage during Saturday’s competition “as an interval act” with his new single, Can’t stop the feeling.
The annual competition, known for its peculiar blend of techno beats, rock ballads and bubblegum pop, attracted more than 200 million viewers last year.
This year’s contest in Stockholm will air in the 42 participating countries, plus China, Kazakhstan, Portugal, New Zealand and, for the first time, the United States.
Dami Im is representing Australia with her song Sound of Silence, with online polling putting her among the top five contenders.
Show Producer Sven Stojanovic says Timberlake’s appearance is made extra special because Swedish songwriters Max Martin and Shellback have co-written and co-produced his song.
“We are proud to welcome one of the world’s greatest artists! It is an honour and an inspiration to all of us”, said Martin Österdahl, Executive Producer for the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest.

Aussie contender Dani Im has been mooted as a strong contender for the Eurovision top five.

I had to go find a image of this dude...wasn't sure

an actor/comedian/movie star/sitcom...but he seems

So what's his beef with Australia --- has he ever

Oh for goodness sake! He isn't against Australia - he even says he isn't agaisnt Australia!
I am NOT against Australia but I agree with him!
China, USA, Austrailia - NOT IN EUROPE.
It's the Eurovision Song Contest. For European countries. It's been going for years and I have no idea why they've started changing it.
If Oz and US and China want a song contest a make their own!!!
This irritates me. Someone says "Oh I don't think Obama should be over here spouting on about Europe!" and all of a sudden that someone is anti-American

Yes, like it's been for the last half a century. What's wrong with that?
It's a EUROPEAN song contest.
It is now not the same any longer, so they may as well change the name, Americanise it, like they do with everything else, and that's the end of that.

Rather odd and ignorant of ole' Graham to go ranting off about Australia isn't it '?' and he clearly was quoted >The annual competition, known for its peculiar blend of techno beats, rock ballads and bubblegum pop, attracted more than 200 million viewers last year.

So 'technically not in Europe' but "Get rid of Australia", made sense ...see it's statements like that that make people like me - think that entertainers just need to be 'SEEN AND NOT HEARD' --- something from my fathers generation!“Get rid of Australia,” The Sun quoted him as saying. “I know some countries aren’t technically in Europe but, come on — Australia is on the other side of world.”

HER MAJ'S 90th Birthday celebrations are under way...
SO NOW we have Graham Norton wanting to remind everyone over there that he can be just as big a Queen !
NEVERMIND that such "European" countries as Israel and Turkey have appeared on there over the years..
OR THAT it was the Eurovision people themselves who invited Australia to send over an entry...
CONSIDERING the number of Aussie and Kiwi celeb's that Graham Norton regularly has on his show, maybe he should be a little wary of "biting the hand that feeds him" -- or maybe the likes of Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Chris Hemsworth and Kylie Minogue should start charging appearance fees ?

Who says people agree that Israel and Turkey should be allowed entry?
Absurd reasoning, though Turkey is going to be accepted into the European Union.
Not that it matters, Graham Norton is right, its not the "Worldvision contest" or the "Upsidedownvision Contest", but the "Eurovision Contest"

Morning 4Ever. Actually Graham Norton is a really funny guy and has compared the contest for the UK ever since Terry Wogan couldn't do it anymore. No way am I against Australia, neither is he, but it's the European Song Contest, for some reason a couple of years ago they let people in further afield, and then last year because it was a special year, they let countries in from even further. If they want to do that, stop calling it the European Song Contest, but I think it would be a shame, it's a bit 'something we love to hate' and moan about, and an institution in Europe. I'm with Graham. They are even having a row about which counties are going to be allowed their flag FGS.

Well said sassy and Didge.
It's not rocket science and there's nothing stopping any of these other countries having their own song contest!!
I'd watch it!

Well, I'm not in charge to that 'PARTY / AWARD' ceremony any more then I was given my POV about our own Oscar fiasco this past year; but if there's going to be an issue about 'distance' then shouldn't it be a true measurement '???'
Latitude & Longitude from the site of the parrrrrty? And that's about how much value that this entire issue has for me

Re: Graham Norton outs him self as anti-Australian
Honestly, these Irish people eh?
To be fair, he does have a point. It's supposed to be the Eurovision song contest, not the worldwide song contest. It's already so long that they have to split it, and it's still so long at the final that you forget the first song by the time you've heard the last one. There was one year when I'm sure that Terry Wogan didn't realise that it had ended because it just went on and on.
I do think the UK song is good this year - surely we must get some decent votes this time.

Veya I don't care which country wins, for me it's about the song actually, as I'm a music buff boffin botherer.
So I am not interested in winning blah blah
It's a song for Europe - Australia isn't in Europe, and you know I'd be saying the exact same thing of it were vice versa.

Is it just 'ME' or is it the contentious way we are viewing our territorial claims?
Have all the award shows around the world become so filled with strife?
My country is better than your country - my racial group should have had more nominations in the Oscar Awards then all you whities - they should include THOSE people - why is that country included and this country excluded???

Ah yes - Guy Sebastian maybe? He wasn't too bad.
There was a one-off "World Idol" some years ago, but Guy only came 7th. Our own Will Young came 5th. Everyone was completely blown away by the Norwegian though - Kurt Nilsen. He even beat Kelly Clarkson.
