'Cash for Clegg' controversy after Deputy PM visits firm FOUR DAYS after accepting £30,000 donation
What a coincidence: Nick Clegg visits Autofill Worldwide in November
The Liberal Democrats face a “cash for Clegg” row after the Deputy PM visited a donor’s firm.
Nick Clegg toured Autofill Worldwide Ltd’s factory on November 8, four days after accepting £30,000 from managing director Anthony Ullmann.
Mr Ullmann will make 20 donations of £1,500 a month to Mr Clegg in the run-up to the election, Parliament’s register of MPs’ interests shows.
Labour seized on the visit to the plant in Ashfield, Notts, as proof that the Lib Dem leader has his priorities wrong.
Shadow Small Business Minister Toby Perkins said: “This cash for Clegg raises questions.
“While Nick Clegg’s government signs off tax cuts to millionaires, he seems busy helping out donors rather than hard-working families.”
A Lib Dem spokesman said Mr Ullmann was an old friend of Mr Clegg and there was no link between the donation and the visit.
He said: “This accusation is as wrong as it is ludicrous.”
He said Mr Clegg was a “passionate advocate” that being in the EU was good for British business and it was “no surprise that many business people agree and some wish to support him”.
