On this day in 1898
Paul Robeson born this day 1898-a man who sang for peace, justice & socialism. A man who changed the lyrics of 'Ol man river' to a declaration of resistance. I was in awe back then, in the 50's when my grandparents introduced me to his incredible voice on a wind-up gramaphone.

I could listen to him all night. I'm also riveted by his life story.

Re: On this day in 1898
I wish I had the power to project like him
I sing in that register, I can hit the notes quite easily, but I dont have the oooph behind it...
(I can also sing 2...or is it 3 registers higher (countertennor ))
neither very well but hey ho ...I enjoy a good old sing along.....

Singing lifts your soul and takes you to another place. If I'm feeling down I always put the radio on and sing at the top of my lungs. Pretty good for your breathing too.

Re: On this day in 1898
My family all sing, my eldest daughter has a fantastic voice, my Nan sang like an angel and used to sing for weddings etc and my Mum was offered a contract by the same people who managed Vera Lynn, but she couldn't afford to give up her job and they said she wouldn't earn much for about a year. I used to sing with a band and sung up to a few years ago. Now I sing round the house to please myself lol.

Such deep renascence of voice...gave me goose-bumbles all over - even my scalp!
When ever I hear any of his songs I'm reminded of the word > ONOMATOPOEIA
I'd read some where that he made pretty good money doing voice overs and sound affects for the theaters --- back when he often wasn't allowed through the front doors...he'd slip in the back door and stand beside the orchestra pit or piano player. He could produce a range of instrument sounds that made it feel like an entire orchestra was playing...when on the CHEAP, it was just he and the lonely piano player.Onomatopoeia is when a word sounds like the thing or action it describes. This dictionary lists 768 onomatopoeic words and phrases, including kaboom, meow and splash! http://www.writtensound.com/index.php

I never knew that about him. He encountered so much prejudice, and then McCarthyism.
Going off for a bit, might be back later, pm'd you.
