Marijuana sales in Colorado top U.S.$1 million on first day; world taking note
DENVER - Pot shops did record sales compared to the "medical marijuana days" on Wednesday when recreational marijuana opened. Pot shop owners across Colorado believe they collectively made more than $1 million statewide.
Supporters, critics and other states are waiting to see what will happen in Colorado on day two and beyond. In Perth, Australia, headlines say "Move Over Amsterdam."
Long lines and blustery winter weather greeted Colorado marijuana shoppers testing the nation's first legal recreational pot shops Wednesday.

Pretty amazing. I had heard that even illegal pot is now the no. 1 cash crop in California.

Yeah, here's hoping that rational-minded leaders will see this as a boon to the ailing economy. In fact, I will be so bold as to predict that in 2020, marijuana sales and same-sex marriage will be legal in most of the U.S.
Re: Marijuana sales in Colorado top U.S.$1 million on first day; world taking note
Unquestionably, same-sex marriage. It's going forward like a steamroller.

Even if the taxes are lower, it's still going to do great things. $1 million in sales in one day and that's just from the early adopters?
People are going to be flocking to Colorado (and Washington State, when it comes online) to start stores. People are going to be growing this stuff to sell to the stores; people will be traveling to Col. to take advantage of the fact you can buy a quarter-ounce at a time for in-state consumption. The sheer volume of economic activity is going to be staggering, and taxes can be collected at many different steps along the way -- sales licenses, growing licenses, sales taxes, property taxes on establishments, and so on.
Now imagine if all 50 states had this, or even just 25.
What I love is hearing the 66 percent of Republicans who are opposed to legalization trying to support their position. "People are going to smoke pot and drive!" Sheltered little lambs; they already do that! :D

They're sort of all over the place on this. While some Republicans have lobbied for things like lowering the legal drinking age in Texas (from 21), Tea Party nutjob Sharron Angle, who challenged Harry Reid for his Senate seat, does indeed support bringing back Prohibition:

OMG, I never for one instant thought there would be one who wanted to. Ok, next step, ban prescription drugs, let people suffer, more people addicted to prescription drugs than heroin.

Get Alcatraz back up to speed as well and we'll maybe get some real good movies to cap it all off.

Leave Alcatraz alone. It's bad enough that they decided to make that ugly prison a monument. But don't encourage them.
If we could gut the buildings and plant a beautiful garden, wouldn't that be delightful?
