division by zero is invalid....

so the sum itself as presented is nonsensical....

to be valid (and obey the BODMAS rule of mathematical priority ) and thus make sense it needs re writing as

5+3x2-10/ (0+10)

in which case the answer is 0.1

becasue

according to the rules
we have 5+ (3x2) -10/(0+10)

so you work out the top of the division first
then work out the divisor

then do the division

multiplication has priority over addintion
hence
5+(3x2) is 11

NOT (5+3)x2 which is 16

arguably so zack...but only if you do the maths WRONG and have an active division by zero...

you have to mensurate both top and bottom of the divison FIRST

so you dont actually have division by zero

since 0+10 = 10

and mathematically speaking infinity is undefined....

yes, but....

since infinity is undefined, the answer means you have your "mathematical model" wrong.

Yeah, my first thought was that there's never been a human being who has been able to solve that problem, since division by zero is impossible -- don't know why Americans were singled out.

Here's one -- a man sees his friend on the opposite side of a river and crosses over to greet him. He doesn't have a bridge or boat, but he doesn't get wet. How did he do it?

pretty sure it is 10.

                      10
5 + (3*2) -   -------           =   5+6-1  =  10
                    (0+10)

@Zack
human error in the writing of the algorthm.

IF I was given that as computer typed Notes i would automatically assume the Division(/) is meant as a Fration marker.

so it would be 10 / (0+10) which is 10/10 which is 1

10/0 is irrational number so you cannot use it in a standard formula. thus assumption must be that is not what is implied.

ARITHMETIC INVOLVING ZERO

If you add zero to or subtract it from any other number that number does not change,

e.g. 2 + 0 = 2, 6 – 0 = 6, 0 + ½ = ½ .

If you multiply by zero, the answer is always zero,

e.g. 5 ´ 0 = 0, 10000 ´ 0 = 0,

0 ´ Can you solve this? * Stick your mind-bogglers here! Image47 = 0, (-6) ´ 0 = 0.

If zero is divided by another number the answer is zero,
e.g. 0 ¸ 6 = Can you solve this? * Stick your mind-bogglers here! Image48 = 0.
You can NEVER DIVIDE BY ZERO
e.g. Can you solve this? * Stick your mind-bogglers here! Image49 and Can you solve this? * Stick your mind-bogglers here! Image50 are all undefined.
notice to make the fraction look normal they loaded them as images Wink
