Report: Oxford students laughed at attacks on Parisian Jews

According to the 'Sunday Times', Labour Party club members called Jewish students 'Zios', dubbed the Auschwitz death camp 'a cash cow', sang about rockets being fired at Tel Aviv.

Members of the prominent University student group affiliated with the Labour Party laughed at Jewish victims of terrorism and made fun of the Holocaust, the Sunday Times reported. According to the British weekly, club members called Jewish students “Zios” (a term for Jews usually confined to Ku Klux Klan websites), dubbed the Auschwitz death camp “a cash cow,” sang about rockets being fired at Tel Aviv and expressed approval for both attacks on Parisian synagogues in 2014 and the shooting of four Jews in a Paris supermarket the following year. A number of students belonging to the club spoke to the newspaper following the failure of the group’s national leadership to publish the results of an internal investigation more than a week after its completion.

The Labour Club first came under fire last month due to the resignation of Oxford co-chairman Alex Chalmers, who alleged that “the attitudes of certain members of the club toward certain disadvantaged groups was becoming poisonous.” “Whether it be members of the executive throwing around the term ‘Zio’ with casual abandon, senior members of the club expressing their ‘solidarity’ with Hamas and explicitly defending their tactics of indiscriminately murdering civilians, or a former co-chair claiming that ‘most accusations of anti-Semitism are just the Zionists crying wolf,’ a large proportion of both [Oxford University Labour Club] and the student[s] left in Oxford more generally have some kind of problem with Jews,” Chalmers lamented on Facebook.

Soon afterward, an investigation was announced, with the club’s leadership stating that it “wholeheartedly” condemned anti-Semitism and that it would cooperate with the investigation, encouraging its members to come forward. Members of the group who did testify, however, were soon disillusioned, turning to the press rather than wait for the results to be published. Last month, the group received a harsh repudiation by former Labour chief Ed Miliband, who announced he would not speak at Oxford until the investigation was completed. Meanwhile, writing in Jewish News, Labour MPs Michael Dugher and Rachel Reeves called the group’s decision to endorse Israel Apartheid Week “ignorant, offensive and deeply unfair.”

“How we deal with allegations of anti-Semitism and racism inside our party is a big test for Labour,” the lawmakers stated, asserting that while it was admirable that an investigation was conducted, it was disappointing that the resulting report had not been public. The British-Jewish community has been vocal in its anger over the anti-Semitism scandal, with Jonathan Arkush, an Oxford alumnus and president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, stating last month that “the stench of anti-Semitism now appears to have permeated the Oxford University Labour Club at my old university.” “As we have often warned, this is in part a direct result of the anti-Israel bigotry, prevalent in the far Left, and in part from the fact that Israel is used as a pretext for racism directed against Jews. The Labour Party and Oxford University must now take rigorous and credible measures to rid themselves of all anti-Semitic and racist elements.”

Britain’s Zionist Federation also called Labor to the carpet, stating that while virulent anti-Semitism used to be associated with “right-wing thugs,” it now appears to be “almost de rigueur amongst left-wing intellectuals.” “But the rot goes beyond a few bad apples – it’s not surprising that Labour students glorify Hamas when their own party leader, Jeremy Corbyn, has described them as a social justice movement whilst inviting them to Parliament. “The views and actions of these supposed socialists are now indistinguishable from those of fascists.”
Long seen as staunchly opposed to Israel, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn held his first meeting with the senior leadership of organized British Jewry a week ago in which he offered his support for a two-state solution in what appeared to be an effort to mend fences.

During that meeting, Corbyn “resolved in strong terms to fight anti-Semitism from wherever it comes” and “rejected any sort of violence or intimidation such as occurred at King’s College London,” the Board of Deputies said on its website. Corbyn was referring to a January talk by former Shin Bet head Ami Ayalon, which was disrupted by pro-Palestinian demonstrators who turned violent, smashing a window, setting off fire alarms and unleashing “a tirade of verbal abuse, inches from the faces of many Jewish students,” according to witnesses.
Overall, London experienced a massive surge in anti-Semitism in 2015, with anti-Semitic incidents up more than 60 percent over the previous year.

According to Metropolitan Police, 483 anti-Semitic crimes were recorded during the 12-month period ending on November 15, while only 299 such incidents were recorded during the corresponding period in 2014, marking an increase of 61.5%.

The fact is these idiots think that people thought as we do today. Its easy to condemn in hindsight events to things in the past which if these same people lived back then they never would have condemn. What's ridiculous is the people are giving these students any credence. I used to be a student, and of course they get involved in "causes" because that's what students do. Nobody took much notice then, but they seem to nowadays.

The insecurity of the right, as the causes of old, white men fall out of favor. Same thing is going on in this country...perhaps even more advanced. Look at Donald Trump. A whole flock of knuckle-draggers up in arms about female uppitiness and loser POWs.

Whenever I hear about any of these student laughs, demonstrations and "protests" these days, from either side (or no sides..), I ask myself two questions :

1. How many students are there at those institutions ?

Average uni's usually have 10-15,000 students, while some of those bigger and older ones might have 30-60,000.. 

2.  How many students were involved in those demonstrations ?

Somtimes it's only a hundred or two' people involved. In those cases that might only represent a fraction or so of one percent of the total student body..

A bit different to the turnouts they had during the Vietnam War (I was still in Primary school, back in the late '60's..); and during some of the more important issues...
Sometimes it's more telling to look at just where some of these minor incidents are being reported..

I don't think they could throw students for laughing at something, but if the Labour Party Club is seen as representing the University, that's a different matter, and the club should be under fire.

What happened with these people was in very poot taste and they should be ashamed of themselves. If any of them are actually members of the Labour Party they should be booted out. But Labour don't have the copyright on this sort of stuff because the Tory Oxford Conservatives were doing pretty much the same themselves.

And then there was Aidan Burley - a Tory Front Bench Minister involved in the Nazi themed stag party in France. He resigned a a PPS but he still sat on the Tory benches as an MP until the 2015 election. And lathough no longer an MP he is still a member of the Tory party.

So when I look again at this thread I'll expect to see equal condemnation of the Oxford Tories and Aiden Burley.

What has this article 5 years old have to do with the massive and growing problem of antisemitism within the Labour party?

Jeremy Corbyn has been criticised by a senior Labour MP for failing to stamp out anti-Semitism within the party after a series of allegations that some of its members are hostile to Jews. Louise Ellman, who is herself Jewish, said that while Mr Corbyn had spoken out about the issue, not enough was being done to actually tackle the problem.

She said that party members were being allowed to “get away” with posting anti-Semitic comments online. “Some are being allowed to get away with posting anti-Semitic comments in their tweets and on their websites. I have raised this in parliamentary meetings. “The leader has spoken out clearly that he is against anti-Semitism but it is not just about words, there has got to be some action, and we haven’t seen enough of that.”

Her comments came after a series of incidents involving anti-Semitic comments by Labour activists including one, Vicky Kirby, who was suspended after posting a series of tweets referring to Jews with “big noses” and describing Hitler as a “Zionist God” but allowed to return and become vice-chair of her local party. She was later suspended again when her case attracted publicity, after MP Wes Streeting claimed party members were cutting up their membership cards in disgust over her readmission.

The chairman of the Oxford University Labour Club recently resigned, saying a “large proportion” of its members had “some kind of problem with Jews”, while the shadow leader of the Commons, Chris Bryant, has also raised concerns. Shadow chancellor John McDonnell, a close ally of Mr Corbyn, insisted they were committed to dealing with the issue. “You can be a critic of the Israeli state and its role, but you mustn’t allow that to in any way be used by anti-Semites. We’ve got to root that out and we will do,” he told BBC1’s The Andrew Marr Show.

Mr Corbyn said in March that anti-semitism was “totally unacceptable”. This came after Luciana Berger, another Jewish Labour MP, tweeted an example of some of the anti-Semitic tweets she receives. “I am very concerned about anti-Semitism in the Labour Party. Most members of the Labour Party are not anti-Semitic but some are,” she told Sky News’s Murnaghan programme.
