People who are really good at swearing have an important advantage
Those who are liberal in their use of swear words are not the lazy and uneducated individuals they are often made out to be, a new study claims. In fact, a well-stocked vocabulary of swear words is actually a healthy indicator of other verbal abilities. Writing in the Language Sciences journal, US-based psychologists Kristin Jay and Timothy Jay, dismiss the long-held belief that swearing is a sign of inarticulateness. Working with the “poverty of vocabulary” concept (the assumption that people swear because they lack the intellectual capacity to find another way to express themselves) their experiment aimed to find out whether those more fluent in the art of swearing are less fluent in other forms of vocabulary.

What has the size of the persons head got to do with anything sassy, are you claiming size is a denotion of a lack of intelligence?
You do realise that actually Africans have a smaller cranial size than asians and whites and what has been wrongly used to claim inferiority by racists. As the size of the brain does not denote whether someone is intelligent or not.

in reality of course its:-
a small cask formerly used for liquids, butter, or fish.
a unit of liquid volume equal to half a kilderkin (usually 9 imperial gallons or about 41 litres).

Timothy Jay in his book "Why We Curse" (John Benjamins Pub Co. 2000), suggests that it's caused by damage to the amygdala, a region of the brain that normally mitigates anger and aggression. Because cursing is a form of verbal aggression, amygdala damage could result in the inability to control aggression, including verbal aggression, or cursing.
That's more like it init and I seldom swear on line?

I think it's when it is used aggresively and laced with hateful abuse that that reasoning kicks in. Sort of uncontrolled as the words say.

Re: People who are really good at swearing have an important advantage
People who swear all the time are generally a bit gobby and loud-mouthed, and I'm not generally keen on gobby loud-mouthed people, but I quite like it when someone who doesn't usually swear does it - it makes them seem more human and approachable.

Swearing doesn't bother me either online or in RL....I find smutty talk tiresome though.
I tend to find people who eff and blind all the time, or call others sweary type names....are usually a bit thick.

Re: People who are really good at swearing have an important advantage
I don't think swearing has anything to do with aggression, or even boisterousness or abuse. It's a form of expression.
John Dewey taught us (Dewey, How We Think) that we think in narratives, not nouns. So how we feel about something is intricately entwined with what we are talking about. E.g., we don't just think of OJ Simpson...we think of that damn OJ Simpson, who murdered his wife, damn his fookin' eyes! So, swearing is a way to incorporate the exact flavor of the narrative, or how we feel.

Let me clarify: of course, aggression, boisterousness and abuse are forms of expression. What I meant was that swearing doesn't necessarily correlate with with these things. Swearing may express, say, aggression, but it may equally express the opposite. It just depends on the context.
