Call To Beef Up 'Inadequate' Coastal Security

A security expert says the UK Border Force desperately needs more boats to do its job properly and help keep Britain safe.

Britain's vulnerable coastal borders are a "soft option" for terrorists determined to smuggle weapons into the country, a security expert has warned.
The country is on high alert after gunmen ran amok in Paris killing 130 people and injuring around 400 more.
But while the UK might have the natural defence of being surrounded by water, only five Border Force boats patrol the entire coastline.

They are not boats,but Cutters. Each has 2 crew working alternate patterns.Apart from maintenance there are always 5 patrolling or at short readiness to go to sea.
All the crews are professional mariners.

however its capability could be more affective if they had operational control over all inshore waters along with the RNR,RMAS,Police,coast guard,ect ect
ironically they was a service that could and did all that during the war and till about 25 years ago and it disbanded as a result of defense cuts back then

Isn't it amusing to see how touchy some posters get when they proven to be incorrect.
The BF needs a minimum of 7 operational Cutters,and in addition 4 regional smaller patrol boats as well as river patrol launches/ribs to be fully effective.
That isn't going to happen anytime soon, a result of which our non canalised borders will remain porous.

This government don't care about protecting our coasts frojm people trying to infiltrate this country.
They took two of the cutters out of service and sent them down to the Med to help with search and rescue of refugees cossing over into to Europe.
I don't mind that but there were other RN ships available just criusing around the globe flying the flag for Britain.
