not particularly it is more to do with the new terror alerts that do not sound threatening compared to out fire alerts that are common roads signs in rural areas so are what we are used to.
the 2nd lowest is Possible... our normal second lowest warning state is High I think they are relying on the subliminal colour coding
BUT terrorists can only go to level 5..
Fire can get to level 6
it is actually true though the huge 'once a decade fires' can Burnout an area the size of Germany, that sort of give you some perspective, we measure our Bushfires by comparing them to size of Europeans nations
P.S. Australia is always in drought it just moves about ...
this is what makes settling the inland so hard, rivers just disappear for a decade then come back, some times on a slightly different path.
Also probably a major reason why aboriginals remained nomadic.
the most settled aboriginal populations were in the south east coastal regions, where most Australians live now, because it is the least drought prone

She seems particularly angry that the farmers are really struggling and no one seems to be helping?
She says the government is do nothing?!

Re: Australia has a new Alert level rating
Farmers in Western Queensland are at the moment . but other areas going great guns
that is always the thing, Somewhere is in drought and it is terrible for the farmers there but at the same time western Queensland farmers where over drawing from the rivers and stuffing up the farmers in South Australia when they were in plentiful rain and south Australia was struggling...
the reality is that as bad as it is for the farmers affected the drought is effecting areas we don't give a shit about. they are the low profit areas where Farmers have kept ignoring environmental warnings in the past and exasperated their problems by expanding often on credit to the maximum that they could support during the good times with the pretty shortsighted view that they are permanent, when the bough it all cheap BECAUSE the area is drought/flood prone.
And people do support them, you can donate at the link below.
they get the same gov't assistance as anyone else.
We don't want to create a situation like Europe where Subsidized farmers are ridiculously inefficient and noncompetitive on a global scale.
that some farmers do go under is a fact of life they are business after all, if they are not competitive then they should close and let someone else try.

Re: Australia has a new Alert level rating
Interesting to hear someone else take on it, thanks
My friend is really vocal about it (she's an ex uk resident and emigrated to your shores about 15 years ago)
She reckons Oz sends too much money abroad and isn't helping these farmers.

Re: Australia has a new Alert level rating
it really depends on the area your in I can guess she is probably in Queensland because of the current drought concern.
Queensland has the additional problem of a shit house State Government That by the Constitution is supposed to look after water supply (with federal oversight) Really they are the 'basket case' state of Australia.... Building in flood Plains, fucking up the Great barrier reef, not insuring Infrastructure all sorts of dumb shit.... NSW and Victoria (most Aussies) generally think it is because it is too hot there and their brains have cooked.
Some more perspective on scale
If I wanted to drive there it would be a day as in 25 hours of driving about 2300km... You literally live closer to Warsaw than I live to Western Queensland

Yes she is in Queensland. She says your country treats the farmers appallingly! The U.K. doesn't look after its farmers either

Re: Australia has a new Alert level rating
a lot of the support is state government based, like the USA we have the 2 tiers of government over each other. the federal support is not much and the the State support varies, my state(NSW) is OK but South Australia is really good but like most services in Queensland theirs is not very good.
Queensland is a bit like the southern states of the USA, they elect crazy state governments.

Why do the crazies get in to Queensland? Unless the Queensland residents are crazy too?

Sydney says it is freezing at 6C but in Queensland it freezing at 10C.
most of Summer is spent above 30C and the humidity is much higher than Sydney too.
