Use Jaffa Cakes instead of tampons, says Osborne

THE government has urged women to save money on sanitary products by using Jaffa Cakes.

Tampons are controversially taxed as a ‘luxury, non-essential item’, whereas Jaffa Cakes are VAT exempt in the UK.

Chancellor George Osborne said: ’You can get a box of 24 Jaffa Cakes for about a pound in most places, whereas tampons cost on average £2.

“You can maybe eat half of the box of Jaffa Cakes and use the other half in place of tampons.

“They have a soft, cake like bottom, so I’d imagine they would absorbent to some degree. I would lick or scrape the chocolate off first because it might melt.

“Perhaps use two or three in a small stack for those days when you have ‘big stuff’ going on.”

the only time i voted for RW gov't here was to introduce a GST and get rid of ridiculous 'luxury taxes' etc
Bloody stupid and the fact they all (legacy taxation systems)  seem to have tampons listed as luxury just shows how crap for the majority of people it was to live under governance from pre 21st century.

Bloody ridiculous idea. And anyway, Jaffa Cakes (real one's) are made in Edinburgh.

Secondly, the EU dictates that we must put a minimum of 5% tax on womens sanitary products... so all you lot who support EU membership are responsible for it!!!

I don't think anyone took the OP seriously.

But putting a luxury tax on a tampon is a real issue for women.

And the fact that a Jaffa cake is not seen as a luxury item is just wonderfully ironic.

The EU makes us put the tax on the tampons.

The jaffa cake is included as regular food so does not have vat added like other regular foods.
