COLUMBIA, S.C. — Viral videos of a white sheriff’s deputy upending and dragging an uncooperative black girl in a high school classroom have played into a contentious national issue with particular resonance here — the intersection of race and school discipline and whether black students are disproportionately punished.
The incident, which the Justice Department said Tuesday that it would investigate, follows a set of national studies showing that black students were far more likely than whites to be disciplined in public schools, even for comparable offenses.
The issue was receiving intense scrutiny here long before the videos released Monday.

It is obvious the girl fell off her chair and the good officer was trying to stop her hurting herself.

Pretty Crazy how violent they are to students.

I cant believe a man let alone a cop does that to a teenage girl...
there should be consequences for using violence.

The SRO (school resource officer) is on unpaid suspension, pending an internal investigation by the internal review board (IRB).

The Sheriff is none too happy--in fact, I would say the proper word is pissed--as gleaned from his national press conference this afternoon. He has asked the FBI to step in and take over the criminal investigation (not the IRB investigation). He has also asked the United States Attorney to take over prosecution, if any. Both the FBI and the US Attorney have taken over the criminal case. It's unclear whether they are conducting their investigation under US law or South Carolina law, or both.
