what topics are available for discussion?????
It seems to be that hyper sensitivity to debate subjects could result in any debate being closed down...
Surely this cannot be the intentions of a debate forum....
If we stop health threads because we have all lost someone, especially to cancer...
any topic can be stopped and let's face it do we really know anything about the people who post on here...

Just about any topics are okay as long as they are not started with the intent to have a go at a poster.
Simple, so just understand the rules

No topics are off-topic as long as the intention is to discuss and not to harrass.
I do think threads are pointless though, if they don't contain a paragraph or two from the poster who started the thread.

AND it is not really a random discussion forum it is meant to be NEWS related.
So if there is a current reason that alternative medicine is in the news then it would something to discuss. it should include a link to the news article.
Vague, Open ended posts that contain a couple of sentences are not really suitable. If you did want a discussion on a not current news topic then you should Post links to specific articles you want to discuss.
Didge's post about History are good examples of how to post non-news items. A reasonable Chunk of text and links to source and/or more information

And I hadn't thought it had to be current news. It can be any news...could be a couple of years, or even decades back, but it's something you want to discuss. Certainly we still discuss the Iraq II war around here.

Re: what topics are available for discussion?????
It doesn't have to be brand new but shouldn't be old articles either if it is posted in news or politics.
with Iraq 2 there is still current news/editorials that cover that content plus the whole ISIS thing that is a direct outcome of Iraq 2.
It is not that hard, If you are going to start a thread give it enough details in the OP. Don't start threads with just a couple of sentences and no links, and if it is a completely not-news and off topic (like Alternative medicine or Some History article) then post it in the proper section, and the Op should Primarily be the article.
Like i Said Dozens of great post by didge in the history section that show how to do it properly.

Re: what topics are available for discussion?????
Well, I think, for example, the Cold War is still relevant. And a lot of that was determined by the way we ended WWII. There's a great quarterly periodical called Current History...no, not a contradiction in terms...just reminds you how epochs are related.
And if you want to talk gun control in the US (or lack thereof), how can you hold a conversation that doesn't go into the Civil War?
