Government Spying losing the US money
California's Silicon Valley could lose up to $35bn (£21bn) in revenue as companies and citizens use computer services in other nations to avoid snooping by US intelligence agencies, a study has suggested.
In a report for the Washington DC-based Information Technology & Innovation Foundation think tank, senior analyst Daniel Castro said America's "entire tech industry" had been implicated - and was now facing a global backlash.
The possible loss, which covers the next three years, is based on the assumption that many companies outside the US will buy services in other countries rather than risk copies of their data being turned over to the US government.
The estimate comes amid claims some US tech firms have given access to spies to scoop up data from servers and cloud computing warehouses.

The backlash against spying was bound to happen and I expect it is happening here as well. Personally, although per say I am against government spying, there would be a lot to be said for it if they picked up on all the extremists online, from both sides of the fence.

I'm really unsurprised; this is costing us in so many ways. Business revenue; standing in the world; alliances ...

Interesting link, I'm sure we do the same. People like to pretend we are goody two shoes, we sure aren't! We do just as much nasty stuff as anyone else.

Actually I think it will be less than expected, we have now gotten ourselves into the same mess(Thanks Snowden ) and Abbott is handeling it MUCH MUCH worse.
http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/abbott-government-sending-mixed-messages-over-spying-indonesians-say-20131208-2yz43.html
The Foriegn minsiter is rightfully apologising and promising we wont do it again. and Abbotts going 'fuck yeah, we'll spy on you bitch'. Now considering he is talking to Indonesia, with 600Million people its the largest muslim nation on earth and one of closest neighbours and we have had 'mixed' relations with it over the years, thats just fucking dumb.
Any way, point is pretty sure everyones doing it and more will be exposed for doing it. thus the impact on the USA will be reduced.

Point being, the others say they are only doing it to outsiders, USA and indeed Britain, are doing it to their own. The customers that are being lost are Americans who don't want their own Government spying on them.

the Article is About Silicon Valley losing Customers, we(my employer) are one of their customers (Silicons valley's) we will have to take our business else where because they can no longer guarentee they can meet out Legal Obligations to provide Privacy to 'clients'.
"All non-US citizens are considered legitimate surveillance targets of the NSA, which dwarfs the CIA in budget, manpower and signals intelligence (sigint) capabilities."
It is the International Customers of Silicon Valley that are switching our services to India and Malaysia. Silicon Valley had already outsourced so much work to those nations that it is not a huge step for them to offer the services directly. Apparently in Europe it is the Scandinavians that are taking the Business, which isn't surprising considering their strong privacy laws.
And Australia Outsourced the spying on Australia to the USA, as in our gov't said 'hey can you spy on citizens for us' that also was leaked by Snowden

Re: Government Spying losing the US money
I very grateful to him, always suspected but now its being talked about and people are not amused, something is going to end up being done about it.
