'None of you is a traitor': John Bercow praises MPs in veiled barb at May amid fury at PM's speech blaming them for Brexit deadlock - while politicians say they were getting death threats BEFORE her address

Speaker John Bercow pointedly praised MPs for their hard work and dedication today, saying 'none of you is a traitor' as Theresa May's faced a furious backlash over a Brexit TV address.

The Prime Minister sparked cross-party fury after she used a live broadcast to lay blame for any delay to the UK quitting the EU at the door of Parliament for not backing her deal and accusing her critics of playing 'political games'.

It prompted a torrent of anger from raging MPs who branded her a 'f***ing disgrace', with Tory MP Nigel Evans warning that a third vote next week may now go 'worse than last time', when she was defeated by 149 votes.

Mr Bercow intervened after Hull MP Diana Johnson called for a debate on patriotism, revealing she had received death threats before last night's speech and suggesting Mrs May had 'pitched Members of Parliament against the general public'.

Ms Johnson said: 'In recent weeks, like many in this House I have been accused of being a traitor and I have also had Facebook posts saying that, along with the two other MPs in Hull that we should be shot and hanged.'

After Commons' Leader Andrea Leadsom called for MPs to be 'treated with respect', Mr Bercow said: 'None of you is a traitor.

'All of you are doing your best - this should not be, and I'm sure will not prove to be, a matter of any controversy whatsoever.

'From the chair let me say I believe passionately in the institution of Parliament, in the rights of members of this House and their commitment to their duty.

'And I use the word duty in the singular advisedly - the sole duty of every Member of Parliament is to do what he or she thinks is right.'

Two thirds of MPs are sitting in leave voting constituencies... and 86% of MPs were elected in 2017 under the manifesto promise of honouring the result of the EU referendum, and to deliver on the UK leaving the EU, either with a deal or WTO deal...!

many, particularly older brits, can't accept not being top dog in the pack.


I would still like to WTO rules mean?
were part of the WTO but we cant trade openly with EU nations. they don't agree to because of their membership in the EU  
I don't get how they think it works?

One interpretation only. What YOU really want is mob rule.

British Democracy isn't, nor has it ever been, mob rule.
Nor is American Democracy.
Nor is Australian.

Nor is almost any democracy is the world.

We elect people to do a job that we believe (theoretically) will best serve our best interests.

In this case we have a parliamentary system that has lasted centuries, and for good reason - it usually works out, more or less.

That system does not necessitate holding opportunistic referendums as a way of snatching a few votes. And even if it was, it was advisory.

But again, we will leave. But carry on posting and showing you have only the most simplistic understanding of the word democracy.

You dont  actually choose a representative, since the elected MP doesnt  have to "represent" the constituents at all. Rather than being a representative, i.e delegate, they are allowed to vote in parliamentary matters "according to their conscience"  i.e own personal best interest.
So YES those who voted against the wishes of their constituency members, as expressesd in the referendum ARE in many ways  traitors. Self serving and corrupt.

Those who are elected are the ones who say they will do what the people want... and the politicians spend plenty of time finding out what people want... so they are being dictated to by the people, hence why democracy is a dictatorship by the people...
