The basics would be setting up your firewall correctly, have a good anti-virus that is up to date, use an adblocker and so on.

@Summer
actually this one is different It doesn't target the user with the infected computer, it just runs its trawling software from there... making the infected person computer the unwitting host of their scam. And I am guessing they will be very hard to convict considering even the guilty can say 'Shit i didn't know I had the virus' and hide amongst the unwitting victims.
quite an out side the square approach :::grouch::

Every single thing on my computer needs to be white-listed by me before it can send or receive anything from the Internet so it shouldn't be a problem for me.

It looks like primary things to do to avoid this one are simple -- change your banking passwords and never ever ever EVER click a link in a suspicious e-mail.
Probably best to lay off the midget porn sites for a while, too.

Re: GameOver Zeus: computer virus
Its not a virus - as has already been said, although the big anti virus companies are combating it. However the real sting is it has been around since 2011 and the only reason it is big in the news now (3 years later) is a group made up of the big anti virus companies and several national security units (including the FBI and British version of) have just taken a big big chunk out of the underlying framework that supports it.
Finally just to cheer you up even more (she says being sarcastic) this is nowhere near the scariest most dangerous threat out there right now - there are others similar but much nastier and much worse. About the only reassurance is that personal computers are never the main intended target - yes they will happily use them if infected but they are aiming for big commercial systems.

Run a good anti virus and pay attention to any alerts put out by the anti virus company.
