CANDIDA auris is quickly emerging as a world threat, as the invasive fungus has been responsible for a number of deaths around the globe. Experts are concerned about the fungus’ immunity to major treatments and infection of vulnerable patients.

Candida auris is a fungus which has spread all over the world, raising alarm in the medical community. Discovered in 2009, the fungus has spread through at least 15 countries with deadly consequences. An elderly man was admitted to Brooklyn’s Mount Sinai Hospital last year, and blood tests revealed he was positive for candida. He was quickly confined to an intensive care unit but died three months after he was admitted.

Even after it kills someone, candida auris remains active and continues to multiply.

According to Dr Scott Lorin, Mount Sinai Hospital’s president, the fungus spread through the entire room the patient was quarantined in.

Talking to the New York Times, he said: “Everything was positive — the walls, the bed, the doors, the curtains, the phones, the sink, the whiteboard, the poles, the pump.

“The mattress, the bed rails, the canister holes, the window shades, the ceiling, everything in the room was positive.”

Of course fungi are "resistant" to antibiotics.  As are viruses, protozoa, and various parasities...

Antibiotics and bacteriocides are used against bacteria.

Fungicides are used against fungus infestations...

Easy to pick the non-science jouno's amongst news reporters when they come out with that kind of crap talk; (it was the Express story I'm referring to there -- note the wording in their link..).

Candida is a common group of fungus, including various species that cause skin rashes ('candidiasis'), throat infections, and vaginal 'thrush'.

Obviously, this new species (or sub-species or strain, or mutation, as the case may be..) has so far proven resistant to those fungicides, and fungicidal ointments and powders/puffers that work on other strains and species..

* The first case to be found in Australia for this latest treatment--resistant "superbug" was a man in Victoria last August...
