Re: The real abortion debate
I saw this on Freakonomics, and it's really interesting:
* In 1960 the violent crime rate in America (per 100,000 people) was 160.9. By 1969, that had doubled to 328.7.
* In 1973, the Supreme Court issued the Roe vs. Wade decision that made abortion legal across the U.S. The violent crime rate that year was 417.4.
* Over the next twenty years, the violent crime rate skyrocketed, hitting 758.1 in 1991 and 757.5 in 1992. Violent crime was the number-one concern of most Americans.
* Then 1993 rolled around and the violent crime rate dropped to 746.8. In 1994 it was 713.6, and by the end of the decade it had dwindled all the way down to 523. In 2013, the violent crime rate was 367, the lowest it's been since 1970.
Researchers concluded that at least 40 percent of the drop was attributable to the fact that starting in 1973, pregnant women were no longer forced to give birth and raise unwanted children, who would have a statistically much higher likelihood of suffering from parental neglect and abuse -- the two main ways you make a child grow up into a criminal. The peak age for criminal activity is 14-25.
Starting in 1993, each new yearly crop of 20-year-olds was increasingly made up of children whose birth was welcomed by their parents, and that has made the U.S. a safer country.
