'Isil is a virus, we are the cure': Hackers say they’ve taken down 100 Isil Twitter accounts

Hacktivist group Anonymous claims to have disabled at least 100 social media accounts used by suspected Islamic State recruiters - and vows more are to come:

Hacktivist group Anonymous has delivered a blow to Islamic State by disabling dozens of Twitter accounts it believes are used to recruit fighters.
In an online post titled '#OpISIS' the group lists the Twitter handles of 90 users it has ‘taken offline’ and claims these they are just some of the accounts removed by its team.
The group also lists the full URLs of 12 Facebook users it says are suspected to have been in contact with terrorists in Syria and Iraq, to “keep an eye on”.
Most of the accounts listed are currently suspended or unavailable.
In their online statement Anonymous also issued a warning to Isil, detailing plans to systematically erase and expose their extremist affiliates:

nice one anonymous, as a rule I do not approve of hacking, but in THIS CASE.....good on them......

Why not have the ministry of defense hire them to do some actual good with their skills like here?

nah didge ...leave em independant...let a "ministry" get hold of em and they will jut screw things up.......

Anonymous don't have funding or even proper membership, they really are the equivalent of a digital protest group. the vast majority are not hackers.

If you don't have the skills you can download preconfigured kits that will let you(you're computer) help. although those kits are basically viruses unto themselves allowing some 'anonymous member' control of your computer.
the people that make the kits are(seem to be?) doing it for 'humanities sake'... as yet they haven't taken advantage of security holes people have given them.. a good sign.

Anonymous is very vague.. 4chan, 7chan and Lolsec are real hacker groups although there is significant cross membership with Anonymous which is why media calls Anonymous hackers.

Anonymous definitely has the best media profile not being also known for 'darknet' activities like child porn ... plus the novelty of the V for Vendetta masks.
