American Football: Michael Sam - the Gay Dallas Cowboy who Christians don't want to play

Shortly before he became the first publicly gay player ever drafted by an NFL team, Michael Sam told reporters that he hoped in future he would be seen, "as Michael Sam the football player, instead of as Michael Sam the gay football player."

This weekend, that prospect seems as distant as ever, after a Christian anti-gay group announced plans to protest about the 24-year-old's recent signing by the Dallas Cowboys, at the team's stadium in Texas. American Decency said in a statement that it expected "thousands" to demonstrate today, during the opening game of the Cowboys' season, against the San Francisco 49ers.

Jack Burkman, the lobbyist who leads American Decency, said before Sam was drafted earlier this year that any team prepared to hire the gay player would be "roughed up financially". Christian conservatives, Mr Burkman said, would "not stop until the drafting NFL franchise cannot sell a single ticket, jersey or autographed football".

Born and brought up in Texas, until last season Sam played for the University of Missouri, where he was named the Southeastern Conference's joint best defensive player of the year. He came out after graduating, and made US sporting history when he was signed by the St Louis Rams in the seventh and final round of the NFL draft last May.

IRVING — Michael Sam has one of the NFL’s hottest-selling jerseys.

But if you’re looking for the Cowboys to crank out Sam jerseys now that the defensive end has joined the team, you’ll be disappointed.

Sam is one of 10 players on the practice squad. The club doesn’t mass produce jerseys for practice squad players, and a club official said Wednesday they won’t make an exception now.

Can you still get a Michael Sam jersey? Sure. You can order a customized version just like you can with any other player.

The club has fielded a few of those requests in the 24 hours since the news broke he was coming to Dallas. But you will not see a Michael Sam display at the Cowboys pro shop.

Sam had the sixth-highest-selling jersey in the NFL this offseason as training camps began. The only other defensive player to rank in the top 10 at the time was Seattle’s Richard Sherman.

Another interesting note: Sam has been assigned the No. 46. If he does make the active roster at some point this season, he must change his number to something higher.

Defensive linemen aren’t allowed to wear any number below 50.

One other tidbit: Sam, and every other player on the practice squad, makes $6,300 a week. That salary increases to $25,000 a week if they land on the active roster.
