At least five people have been killed after gunmen attacked a terminal at Pakistan's Karachi international airport, say officials.

Militants armed with automatic weapons and grenades are engaged in a firefight with security personnel, according to police.

Dr Seemi Jamali of Jinnah Hospital said five bodies had been taken there, as well as one wounded person.

Three of those killed were airport security staff, and two were civilian employees of Pakistan International Airlines.

Television footage showed what appeared to be a major fire and plumes of smoke rising from the runway where planes are parked.

All flights are currently suspended.

A civil aviation authority spokesman said: "All flights destined for Karachi have been diverted to other cities."

The terminal targeted by the fighters is said to be used for VIPs and cargo.

Senior police official Rao Muhammad Anwar said: "We don't know the exact number of the attackers but suspect four to six terrorists have attacked the airport."

Karachi is Pakistan's largest city and has been the site of frequent militant attacks in the past.

Its saying 9 people have been killed now, and some of the terrorists. Thank God they didn't manage to get onto a plane in those suicide vests.

Yea, but anyone with half a brain knows that Andy put this in the UK section for a reason, on purpose. Funny how he ignores people being prosecuted for terrorism in N.Ireland but tries to make this look as if it is happening in Britain. And he has been requested not to do it.

Gunmen disguised as police guards attacked a terminal at Pakistan's busiest airport on Sunday with machine guns and a rocket launcher during a five-hour siege that left 26 people dead as explosions echoed into the night.
The Pakistani Taliban, an alliance of insurgent groups fighting to topple the government and set up a sharia state, later claimed responsibility, saying it was in response to army attacks along the Afghan border.
The attack on the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, began late Sunday and continued on into the dawn hours of Monday, although officials said all the passengers had been evacuated.
